题目:ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

From the argument, the author recommends that we should raise Professor Thomas's salary and promote a position to Department Chairperson. And the author also forecases that if we do not tkae these series of actions, she would leave Elm City University for another college. To support his recomendation, the author gives some details to prove that Professor Thomas had a outstanding performance. However, the argument suffers from several logical flaws and is therefore unconvincing.
Firstly,Professor Thomas's teaching seem very successful, because she has the largest classes of the university. The hypothesis that phenonmenon which students attend her classes is due to her interesting teaching style is insufficient. The subject which she teaches maybe a obligatory course in some field ,such as,no matter the students study either biology or finance must stay mathematics. On the other hand, her classes are easy to get credits, for instance, these courses should take exams.Major students who want to get more credits would like select her classes. Thus, without ruling out the other possibility, the author can not convine me effiectly.
Similarly, the author commits a fallacy of hasty generalization. The author's inference that incentives which were effective in the past will also be effective in the furture rest on poor assuption that during each of the last two years all condition upon which their effectiveness depend have remained unchanged. In the past, the foudation have enough money to grant to research. However, during the financial crisis, the foundation also have abundant flow cash to provide financial aid.And other factors that Professor Thomas's researches could not be focused are possibly exist. As we know, the botanical reseraches are so advanced that people does not think about they are useful, such as botanist attmept to invent a breed of tomato which its root could produce potato. There is also a reason that the competitor with Professor Thomas has advance breakthrough which attract a lot of grant. This reason cause the research grants are less than past two years. The longer the time the less reliable the conclusion that Professor Thomas could attract numerous foundation to grant the research.
Fanlly, even if the popularity of Professor Thomas is very well, and she could maintain to bring the research grant which exceeds her salary in the further.Nevertheless, raising her salary and giving a promotion is unreasonable.Professor Thomas have a perfect professional ability in teaching and researching. However, the position of Department Chairperson need experience of managment, and some related knowledge. Because there are not any evidences that she had managed the department,or she have take some courses of management. It maybe a challenge for Professor Thomas, this promotion perhaps confuses her.Neither she could not conduct the daily teaching and researching, nor she falis to manage the department. So,without proving Professor Thomas could qualified this new position,i do not think this mersure is worthy.
In sum up,the author fails to recomend that we should increase Professor Thomas's salary and appiont her to the Department Chairperson. To strengthen the recomendation, the author must take some pools to the student about wether they select her classes. To support it the author could assure the fact that Professor Thomas is truly so excllent that she can bring numberous research grants and have an ability to manage this department. |
