"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
无论学生们学习什么都应该带着一定的疑问。学生们应该质疑老师教授的东西而不只是被动的接受。(教育问题之学而好问)
There are such kinds of people living in the world: they often question the validity or authenticity of something until they have checked it out for themselves. They won't be convinced until the evidence has been thoroughly proved. And they are always inquisitive about the things until they have understood completely. We call them skeptics, whose most significant characteristic is skepticism. There is a claim that students should be skeptic on whatever they study instead of accepting it passively. From my perspective, skeptic attitudes play a positive role on study. In addition, “a certain” must be added to the skepticism.
To begin with, skepticism is a questioning attitude and people with skepticism always tend to be unsatisfied with what he has learned. From this point of view, skepticism is most suitable spirit for students in the process of study. One may be doubtful on the validity of the equations. One may be suspicious on the calculations or deviations of the problems. And one might even examine the authority in the textbook. Therefore, he won’t stop before he comprehends all he has learned. Gradually, due to skepticism he no longer accepts the knowledge passively and develops a habit that study actively and wistfully.
Assuredly, skepticism push him study and he will be the top student in the class.
Skepticism, especially in the study of scientific and philosophy field, performs a dispensable role. Recall the history, creative ideas and inventions were always associated with skepticism which finally made great contributions to the world. For instance, the young Watt wondered the phenomena that the lid is pushed by the stream. The skepticism urged him to look for the solution and afterwards, the stream engine came out followed by the Industrial Revolution.
Galileo's skepticism successfully aids him to overthrow the assertion by Aristotle that heavy objects fall faster than lighter ones in direct proportional to weight and his demonstration that time of descent was independent of their mass has been retold in popular accounts. Thus, without skepticism students cannot grasp what they are taught apart from the remarkable accomplishment.
However, as previously stated, the word “a certain” must be put in front of the skepticism. On the other word, too much skepticism is unbearable and even harmful to the study to some extent. For example, imagine a student with strong skepticism. Hence, he might be always curious about everything he encounters and appears suspicious on detecting the flaws. Superficially it is studious of him. However, it gives people impression of abnormal mentality and personality. Obviously, it wastes time and vigor and such students may miss out much of the beauty and wisdom in the world and they could not become the good students since they are slow to believe in truths.(有这样的例子就好了~~)
In conclusion, skepticism is suggested to be the best spirit in the process of study as asserted by the author that students should be with certain skepticism during the study. To be sure, there is much sham and tricks in the study while students with skepticism won't be easily taken in by spurious claim. Nevertheless, too much skepticism becomes an obstacle in the study preventing from accepting the wisdom and truths quickly which are self-evidence to others.
