3. +) social: the invent of nuclear power----perspective
4. +) political: colonization------perspective
5. summary
19:30~36~20:16
The speaker claims that the greatest achievements have often resulted in the greatest discontent, no matter they are social, political or individual achievements. I fundamentally agree with the speaker that the greater individual achievements are, the greater the discontent would like be. With respect to social and political achievements, however, it generally depends on the perspective from which we examine.
Individuals' great achievements are very likely to cause discontent for the individual who made that great achievement. This is nearly an underlying law in the fields of art and science. When asked which one is the most satisfying film you've ever directed, most directors would simply answer "The next one." They can always find disappointed details in their works and wish to enhance the weaker part in their next piece of work. The same situation happens more frequently in the field of science. Even the Nobel Prize winners will point out the defects in their most successful findings and theories. And they are most likely to improve the less satisfying part, instead of immersed in the joy of success. These great individuals often require too much from themselves and therefore they are likely to be discontent with the seemingly great achievements with a few defects.
Unlike individuals, asserting whether social achievements would result in great discontent depends on the perspective we use. For example, the study of nuclear power, which initially viewed as a highly effective way to supply energy for human being, turns out to be such a dreary weapon that the whole world has to limit the use of it. The great achievement only yields discontent when its power is proved to be so strong that human safety is under threaten. The similar dilemma happens in the clone technology. When the first clone sheep "borne", the whole world is immerse in the greatest joy. However, with time goes by, greater discontent is aroused for the risk that clone technology may break the ethical rule. In short, social achievements deserve paradoxical assessment, depending on the perspective we use.
Similarly, the comment of political achievements is an ambiguous one. Whether they will result in the great discontent relies on the criteria we apply. An apt illustration is the case of colonization. When the European intruders take charge of America, it is their greatest achievement while for the Native American, it is nothing but disaster. In international trade, export goods successfully gain more share of the market by cutting prices is an achievement of the exporting country. However, for the importing country, the local manufactures suffer the loss and will certain be discontent with the “achievement” of the exporting country. In the political game, achievement for one side usually results in great discontent in the other side.
In sum, the great achievements of individual are more likely to cause discontent for these individuals used to require too much of themselves. While in the areas of social and political achievements, the perspective we use have a strong inclination to the assessment.
