ISSUE51 - "Education will be trulyeffective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needsand interests of each student."



As proverb by the greatest educator Confucious:"Specific education for student with specific gift", the importanceof specialization in education can not be neglected, no matter in the past or the present, in the Orient or Western. Education should be designed, if it ispossible, exclusively for personal need and interest. Yet this ideal educational belief should rarely be actualized without considering limitation in resource arrangement and basic foundation.

For starters, it is well-known thateducation should be specialize for children's personal needs. Every child is anatural and impeccable jade with specific gift , namely, musical talent, mathematicalskill, genius in gardening or the humorous and gregarious disposition. However,without special training in such a professional field, it is no access forMozart to be a great musician, for Newtonto be a giant in physics and Michael Jackson to be "the King of thePop". It is teachers, parents and the whole education system' responsibilityto cultivate the children depending on their personal gift and need, which isthe solitary way, purposed by psychologist Maslow, to approach the seniorpersonal need----self-actualization.

On the other hand, "interest is the best teacher", as its great implementer Einstein said. If the education force students to follow the same rules, learning the same routines, and direct them into a rigid, united mind and interests should be useless in children's believes, the innovation and creativity in society should root on no ground. Interest can trigger and maximize the self-motivation of the students which has been proven by series of education studies. For instance, a student interested in assemble and disassmeble the radio, telephone or other electronic equiptments at home, withprofessional training on specific field, should possible become a handy mechanical technician. Therefore, school education and other educational institutionsshould provide sufficient opportunities for students to develop their realinterest.

Although a lot of people, like me,appreciate the idea of the student-centered education, two problems should begiven to. The foremost thing is the limitation of the educational resources.Since the educational budget is always limited, especially in this financialcrisis moment, it is impossible for school to please every student's demand.Otherwise, all the students regardless of your interest and talent should havefirm foundation in general knowledge before stepping into a specific field.Basic education are also very important.

All in all, in order to educate anindividual as an independent and thoughtful citizen with one’s exclusive characteristic and special skill, schools and parents are asked to do their utmost to provide an open space for developing kids’ own interest, such as offering optionalcourses in a wide range and giving them support to practice in specific field under the premise of conducting basic education for everyone and in an acceptable economic planning.
