TOPIC: ARGUMENT169 - The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.

"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

The argument gives a study first, then the author asserts to offer employment to the spouse of every new faculty member in order to improve their entire staff`s morale and attract gifted teachers and researchers. The author states at last that money invested is well spent although they cannot expect all offers to be accepted because new professors will likely to accept their offers if their spouses have chance of employment. This analysis seems logically at the first glance, but after further considered, there are many facets. I will discuss them in turn.

First, the studies from Bronston College says that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when spouses employed in the same area, the conclusion may not apply to Pierce University, though they are both located in a small town. Maybe the situation changed in Pierce University because the professors living in small town of Pierce University located may far from business malls, they are hardly to do shopping conveniently. So, they may not happy when living in the small town, But the situation in Bronston College perhaps different, the town is near a big mall and people can take buses to go there for shopping. Thus the studies from the Bronston College may not suit for Pierce University. Even if the situation is the same between B college and P University, the studies conduct that professors are happier may not completely caused by living with their spouses. Maybe there are other aspects makes them happy while not only caused by living with spouses such as high salaries, good environment, better family relationships.

Furthermore, the author states that the P University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member may not well improve the morale of their entire staff. Maybe the old faculty also need to live with their spouse, so they may not satisfied with this polity, then the whole morale could not improves. Also, attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers may not sure. Because there is no information to support that this polity can attracting most gifted teachers and researchers and it is the Pierce University do not offer employment to faculty`s spouse makes gifted teachers and researchers are unwilling to come to P University, so P university may not attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers. Moreover, P University should consider other aspect to appealing gifted teachers such as higher salaries or good academic environment.

At last, the author says that the money invested in this effort is worthy maybe not applied. There is no reason that new professors will be more likely to accept offers if their spouses have a chance of employment, maybe they do not care about their spouses` employment but they care about high salaries, so the invested may not worthy anymore.

After discussed these facets in the argument, it needs to improve whether the studies is suit for P University and whether it can attracting the most gifted faculty and improving the morale of entire staff. The argument also needs to support clearer evidence to show that the invested spent is worthy.
