TOPIC: ARGUMENT14 - The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.

"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

In this memo, the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center aims to convince us that the number of people who are interested in growing their own vegetables is increasing these years thus the Green Thumb Gardening Center should expand the stock of the variety of vegetable to enhance profits. To support his/her recommendation, a national survey and a strong sales of local gardening magazines is cited. The author's recommendation seems reasonable and applicable, however, after scrutinizing it, several critical flaws can be found that undermine the lines of reasoning.

To begin with, the evidence of the national supermarkets the author cited in the memo lends scant support to the assumption that an increasingly number of people in local area begin to cultivate and eat their own vegetables. Firstly, the author cited that the survey is undertaken national wide, question may come that can the trend all over the country congruent with the one in local region? Before supporting evidences are provided, the conclusion remains problematic. Secondly, the author unfairly assumes that the glooming sales of vegetables in supermarket should attribute to the changing way of people to get them, however, possibilities may lay there that people recent years dislike to eat vegetables, or less vegetarians nowadays. Thirdly, although the decreasing sales of vegetables results from the people's dissatisfactory, we can not judge that they may prefer growing their own vegetables.

Another evidence the author cited in the memo is the strong sales of the gardening magazine. From my point of view, the evidence does not work well in supporting author's assertion. Little evidence can be found in the memo to introduce the local gardening magazine Great Gardens. Maybe, it is the one concentrating in teaching people to decorate their gardens instead of to grow vegetables. Furthermore, the statistics of three months seems too vague to be a convincing one, many factors will contribute to the rush increase in the sales of magazines. Finally, what is the specific number of magazines sold in three months? It is possible that the magazines are too hard to sale that shops only stock few copies to sell.

Finally, the author's recommendation seems unwarranted. Even though, people begin to grow their own vegetables, what is the motivation for them to buy our products? What are the advantages of our products that superior to others? The author neglects to demonstrate. Referring to the increasing profits, it can not be extrapolated so easily. Providing methods the author recommended bring the company a tremendous sales, it can not certainly means a huge profits, which may influence by many factors.

In sum, the recommendation rests on several unreliable assumptions that render it unconvincing as it stands. To rectify these critical flaws, the author should provide more evidences to illustrate that the assumption that more people begin to grow their own vegetables and will certainly to be our consumers. The profits of the products should also be taken into consideration.

Finally, the author's recommendation seems unwarranted(主题句可以再具体一点). Even though, people begin to grow their own vegetables, what is the motivation for them to buy our products? What are the advantages of our products that (is)superior to others? The author neglects to demonstrate. Referring to the increasing profits, it can not be extrapolated so easily.
