"We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."

794 words

Is it true that we can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own? To solve this puzzling problem, in my viewpoint, the right answer depends on a fair judgement of the process of learning. Based on this fundamental analysis, I agree with the view that we can learn from people whose view we share as well as people in different ideas.
Admittedly, in some circumstances, when people have heavy conflict against different standpoint are likely to gain no more knowledge and intelligence than previous. Because sometimes people own a strong tendency to stick to their own ideas, it is of high probability that they may regard their own thoughts as absolute truth. As a result, they intentionally ignore other ideas, which may help to build up more rightness in their own ideas. This phenomenon can be defined as a drawback of humanity and such character of common people will bring about a substantial loss in society due to the lack of cooperation of people all owns talents but unfortunately fail to quietly listen to others.
However, to some smart brains, they have the brilliance to realizing the significance of learning from others. In that case, besides what they can achieve alone, they would have more opportunity to accomplish great things because more instructive may come to them and thereby providing beneficial thoughts from diverse aspects, which is of great help to promote people to fulfill creative thinking and perform innovations. For such minds, the disagreement would no longer be regarded as some kind of hamper of progress in thoughts as well as in learning. On the contrary, it can even be highly admired as necessity for people who have ambitions to reach their lifelong dreams, because during the pursuit of dreams, human beings absolutely have no capability to work out all things just by themselves for that this society consists of assorted groups.
Facing such conditions, it is crucial for people to hold an open mind to embrace other people's views and furthermore, they must be willing to accept ideas different from, or even against theirs. Such thing sounds simple, nevertheless, in the long history of human beings, it turns out to be a key factor to some extent to decide which side of a competition will be the final winner to some extent, due to the arrogant character of people who may have some cleverness, which is necessary for them to stand out of ordinary people, but also may lead them to lose the valuable quality to follow other's advice due to their self-confidence to solve problems without other's help. According to the above analysis, what prevent people from learning from people whose ideas are against themselves is not the badness of disagreement itself. Conversely, it would owe to the way how people consider other's ideas.
On the other hand, even for these ideas we share with other people, it is still of possibility that they may be baleful for people's improvement in thoughts and learning. To make this point more specific, we can imagine such scene that when people appreciate someone for his agreement in ideas, they have a natural tendency to exaggerate their similarity in thoughts. Consequently, they may think they have already reached agreement in other aspects of minds. In terms of psychology, people would like to extend their sentimental judgement of some others in some special aspect of that human to other aspects. Thus, while people consider one's standpoint to be righteous just because it is consistent with themselves", they may gradually regard such a person as talented, which is unwarranted, but can hamper their ability to gain real learning as they may just follow this one's own ideas and accordingly make latently unreasonable judgement. To prevent such situation from occurring, people should establish a more careful thoughts and cautious analysing ability to distinguish the beneficial and baleful aspects in other people's thoughts, regardless of whether they are consistent or different with themselves' in a sense.
In sum, while such phenomena as the statement says do exist in real society and even have done much harm to the development of society, it is still require a cautious analysis to assert what is the real reason of such drawbacks of society. Just as this issue tells us, we should not place all blames on disagreements themselves which extensively exist in practical world. Conversely, it is reasonable to conclude that the disadvantage of human nature contributes to this occurrence. To avoid such sad things , people should open their mind to others and be aware of the importance of learning. After all, only by cooperating with each other , can people have a good chance to lead society to develop rapidly.
