51."Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
I am in agreement with the speaker that education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. A contrary view would reveal that students across the nation should study the same curriculum, which aims at cultivating students’ basic and application skills. I concede that, through standard education, can one master basic courses and skills, nevertheless, each student’s unique needs and interests should be concerned more by the education designers.
Admittedly, acting as basic tutor, standard education is an indispensable part of our education. Those standardized courses-calculating, spelling and self-rescue classes-show great function in every student’s growth procedure. Take the courses dealing with emergencies such as fire accident or earthquake for example, compared with those haven’t attended relevant courses, students who have been trained show significant higher ability to rescue themselves and escape from the disasters. As a result, the standard courses are necessary and should be taught regardless the interest of the students, for those courses can save their life in critical moments. Based on this reasons, some people asserted that standard courses are most vital for the students.
However, reaching a hasty conclusion barely on those facts is inappropriate. Besides fostering the basic skills, facilitating students to find and develop their own talent is the ultimate goal of our education. Ignoring the different characteristics of each student, the education cannot be effective. In fact, it is students’ different needs and interests that should be taken into consideration seriously by educators. Just as the well known saying, interest is the best tutor of studying, educators should incorporate students’ special preferences into curriculum designation. According to a survey in my school, the average performance of students in selective courses is better for those in required courses. What’s more, nearly 70% of the students state that they devote more effort in selective courses simply due to their own interest. Indeed, the designation of selective courses is a successful case that takes individual interest and need into the education system, resulting in an effective outcome.
In contrast, the failure of ineffective education is often resulted from disregarding individual interest and need. Perhaps the most representative case is the notorious Chinese education system. Seriously ignoring specific need or interest, the Chinese education system designate standard curriculums across the nation, ranging from natural science to social science, even including some ideology courses. What's worse, all students are required to study the same courses and answers to each question are standardized. Although this makes the Chinese students to have relatively stronger calculating and reciting ability, it damped their creativity and independent thinking ability. Sincerely, many big corporate employers will tell you the best students coming out of U.S. universities are just as bright as and, generally speaking, far more creative than their counterparts from China’s elite universities. In other words, ignoring students’ unique needs, Chinese education system didn’t result in an effective outcome.
In conclusion, it is truly because of the designation, which meets the individual needs and interests of each student, makes the education to be truly effective.
