OPIC: Argument 51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment
The doctors adviced that all patients who were diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of their treatment. To support their conclusion, They provided results of a study of two froups of ndpatients, the first group was compare with the second group. As a result, The first group which toook antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment was 40 percent quicker than typically expected. And second group were given sugar pills, their average recuperation time was not reduced. So the doctor deemed their suspect about secondary infections make some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain was proved. It seemed reasonable, however, their illation was not logical and their evidences were not conviced.
First of all, the data of the study was not clear. The doctors did not show the sample size of these two groups. We can not know how many patient in the first group and how many in the second group exactly. If the sample size in the first group is much larger than the second group, or reverse, the data was not convinced. Even if the sample size of these two groups were equal, we still did not know every patient’s recuperation time. The data just show the recuperation time on average. If the recuperation time of the most of the patients in the second group was much quiker than typically expected, however, if one or two patients recovered much slower than expected, so the average data was not convinced.
Secondly, even if the data was convinced, but it still not reasonable to believe the antibiotics made reperation time of the patients in the first group quicker than typically expected. The patients in first group were treated by Dr. Newland, a specialist in sports medicine. However, the patients in the second group were treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician. Their ways of treatment may be different, so this could be one of the factor, too. Even if the waysof treatment are the some, but their ability may be not in the some level. It also could be explain why the recuperation time of the patients in the first group was 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Even if the ability of these two doctor are in the some level and their way of treatment are the same, but we also should consider the constitution of the patients in these two groups, if the patients in the first group are much stronger than the second group, so ther ability of self-recovery is better than the patients in the second group. In a word, it is no reasonable to draw a conclusion that antibiotics were useful for the patients.
Thirdly, the doctor deemed that the secondary infection keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain, so all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of their treatment. However, not all the patients strained so severe, and would led to the secondary infection. Even some of them had secondary infection, there is no evidence shows that only antibiotics could heal them. Theare were other kinds of medicine could make the patient better. In short, if all the patients who had muscle strain took antibiotics for healing, it may led other adverse side effect.
To sum up,it was no logical to conclude all the patients who were diagnosed the muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of treatment. They should provide more details and evidence if they wanted to strength their conclusion. In the same tme, they should eliminate other factors which was mentioned above. |
