3.04 Argument No.14 The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.
"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."
狠拍啊很拍啊 啊 In this memo, the author claims his suggestions for the Green Thumb Gardening Center which is a small business serving a suburban town that increasing the variety of vegetable seeds can bring profits. However, the argument rests a series of unsubstantiated assumptions and it is as persuasive as it stands. First of all, the author mentions that a national survey is conducted. However, it is based upon the assumption that this national survey could be applied to the suburban town. As we all known that the survey is the averaged condition in the county, perhaps the suburban town is the extreme case that could not be reflected from the national survey. Therefore, it is irresponsible to assert that the local people were dissatisfied with the vegetables. Without enough evidence provided, the author cannot take this survey as the reference. In addition, the magazine Great Gardens may not be the indicator that more and more people are growing their own vegetables. Perhaps reason for the sold out is that people merely like reading the funny stories other than search for the methods to grow vegetables. Thus, from this point of view, the author cannot claim that the consumers prefer to grow their own vegetables. Before enough information provided for the survey and magazine, the declaration that more and more people like grow their own vegetables is unsustantiable. Even assuming that more and more people are interested in growing vegetables, it is still unconvincing that increasing the variety of vegetables can increase profits. Recall the profits come from the difference between income and costs. Since we are not sure which kind of seeds that consumers prefer to buy, probably increasing the varieties may increase the costs of the plan, thus, reducing the profits instead. Therefore, before other factors taken into consideration, the author cannot make such hasty generalization. In conclusion, the assertion claimed by the author is fraught with some logic flaws. Basically, the enough evidence should be provided before making conclusion. Furthermore, the information that the local condition is consistent with the nation survey and the reason for buying magazine is people’s interests in growing. Before he makes the conclusion, he also should provide the evidence that the cost is almost same as the previous one.
In this memo, the author claims his suggestions for the Green Thumb Gardening Center which is a small business serving a suburban town that increasing the variety of vegetables seeds can bring profits. However, the argument rests a series of unsubstantiated assumptions and it can not be(is删) as persuasive as it stands.
First of all, the author mentions that a national survey is conducted. However, it is based upon the assumption that this national survey could be applied to the suburban town. As we all known that the survey is the averaged condition in the county, perhaps the suburban town is the extreme case that could not be reflected from the national survey. (最好举个例子说明其特殊性不能被national survey代表,如其文化、经济、政治方面等等。)Therefore, it is irresponsible to assert that the local people were dissatisfied with the vegetables. Without enough evidence provided, the author cannot take this survey(此段中出现了最少三次survey,最好进行一下同义替换research/data/information/investigation…都可以) as the reference.
In addition, the magazine Great Gardens may(could) not be the indicator that more and more people are growing their own vegetables. Perhaps reason for the (换成its) sold out is that people merely like reading the funny stories other than searching for the methods to grow vegetables. Thus, from this point of view, the author cannot claim that the consumers prefer to grow their own vegetables. Before enough information provided for the survey and(换成of) magazine, the declaration that more and more people like grow their own vegetables is unsustantiable(unsubstantial). 和上一段有一样的问题,对于谬误的解释不够充分,应该把例子或者观点进一步的展开,而不是堆砌模板化的语言
Even assuming that more and more(这个短语文中频繁出现,同义代换increasingly/progressively/a greater extent/growingly) people are interested in growing vegetables, it is still unconvincing that increasing the variety of vegetables can increase profits. Recall the profits come from the difference between incomes and costs. Since we are not sure which kind of seeds that consumers prefer to buy, probably increasing the varieties may increase the costs of the plan, thus, reducing the profits instead. Therefore, before other factors taken into consideration, the author cannot make such hasty generalization.
In conclusion, the assertion claimed by the author is fraught with some(换several) logic flaws. Basically, the enough evidences should be provided before making conclusion. Furthermore, the information that the local condition is consistent with the nation survey and the reasons for buying magazine is people’s interests in growing. Before he makes the conclusion, he also should provide the evidences that the cost is almost same as the previous one.
