Is it merely artists that give society something of lasting value? The speaker claims so. I agree with the speaker insofar as the artists contribute directly to creating art and hence act the most important role in giving the society something of lasting value. However, in my opinion, critics are also indispensable in the process as they can help discover and popularize the art.
Obviously, Inspired by their own imagination and creativity,
artists originate many forms of art which carry great value to our society. Trough history, we can see numerous successful artists whose works are of enduring value and have been appreciated and highly praised by many generations. Among them, we see Leonardo da Vinci, who left us fascinating paintings such as MonaLisa and The Last Supper; we see Chopin, who gave us compositions of a fantastic romantic style; and we also see Mark Twain, who created the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and was lauded as the " greatest American humorist of his age ". No one can ever deny their contributions in presenting the society something of lasting value.
So what about critics' work? I concede that critics' work is not that creative and is always indirect to produce value. Moreover, sometimes critics may even make narrow comments on a new form of art and thus impede the development of the art. When pop music first came to China, many Chinese critics held the opinion that the style of pop music was so contrary to the style of traditional Chinese music that it may jeopardize the aesthetic of Chinese people. Being affected by the critics' comments, many Chinese people of that time refused to accept this new music style. Though later proved to be wrong, the critics' negative opinion do impede the prosperity of pop music in China for a long time.
However, as far as I am concerned, in most cases critics' works are positive to develop a good art and are almost indispensable as they help people better understand a certain art and make the art prevailing. For example, we common people sometimes find it difficult to understand some artists' works such as the paintings of Van Gogh. Without critics' help, one may be confused by the meaning of the paintings such as Sunflowers. For another example, attributed to Cao Xueqin who earned the reputation of " China's Shakespeare ", Dream of the Red Chamber is a masterpiece of Chinese vernacular literature and one of China's Four Great Classic Novels. Cao wrote his master piece hundreds of years ago in Qing Dynasty. As the book contained contents that revealed the darkness of feudalism, it was an official banned book at that time and the value of that book has long been neglected by Chinese people. Fortunately, when it comes to the 19th century, more and more Chinese critics found the great value of the book and aroused people's attention to it. Now the study of that book has developed into a discipline named Redlogy and people all over the world appreciate the lasting value of it. If its
value was not discovered by critics, the ignorance of the master piece would maintain for long or even forever.
Moreover, critics can improve the work of artists, too. Before artists establish their reputation, their valuable works may also be ignored by most of us. Critics can discover the potential value of certain works and draw people's attention towards them thus encourage the artists to do better with enthusiasm. To give an example, one need to look no further than Jin Yong, who is an excellent fiction writer in China. Creating a new genre of Chinese literature called WuXia, he has a wide spread following in Chinese-speaking areas. His first works were published on Ming Pao( a Chinese newspaper ) and caused little attention by the masses. However, some critics spoke highly of his creativity and appreciated the attracting plots of his works. Inspired by the comments of critics, Jin went further in the new genre and created many better frictions in the following years. Eventually, his works earned him high prises and his frictions are now treasured by most Chinese people.
In sum, while artists originate art of lasting value, critics' work should not be ignored as they contribute to discovering the value of the art, making the art more understandable and improving artists' work. |
