TOPIC: ARGUMENT83 - The following appeared in a memo from the business manager of Medicine, Inc., a local drugstore.

"Most business analysts for the drugstore industry have stated that even when a nation's economy is weak, drugstores' profits are unlikely to decline appreciably. While consumers might put off some kinds of purchases when the economy is slow, prescription and over-the-counter drug purchases are dictated by consumers' health needs, which are independent of the economy. Therefore, Medicine Inc. is likely to continue to have increasing profits and should plan to open an additional drugstore next year."

In this argument, the author claims that Medicine Inc. should open a new drugstore next year, offering the supporting references that the drugstore are not always related to the economic conditions but the health needs of the consumers. It seems, at the first glance, to be obviously trustful, but one can figure out that the author might have ignored certain crucial details to the judgment.

First, the author provides scant evidence that the consumer buys medicine without thinking about the economic environment, while the truth are likely to be adverse. As is known by almost all of us, one may care about the fundamental health necessities only, when the economic does not go well. One may think about the uncertainty and spend little on health improvements. Certain medicine as vitamins and so forth will be off the list due to the poor current situation. Because of the economy, the consumption on the medicine can be decline accordingly. False assumption should be corrected before the new drugstore is built.

Even I concede that economic circumstance affects little the profits of medicine, the argument is not sound enough. As the argument imply, the consumers purchase the medicine with no regard of the economic situation, then the author automatically concludes that Medicine Inc. will enjoy an increase in its profits. However, the author might have developed a false confidence in that the consumption of medicine might be so steady that neither the economic nor other causes could influence it greatly. Thus, the author has established a non-existed relation between the increasing profits and the economic conditions. It is certainly probable that the profits stand still. Without further researching on the demand of the medicine and other factors, decision on opening an additional drugstore is imprudent and naive.

Moreover, the author suggests that the economy next year continues exactly the same as this year, simply leading an unreliable attribution. It remains a question that the amount of the sales will buoy up. As a direct result, the difference between the two years should be taken into consideration when judging the decision whether there are any alternatives other than adding a new drugstore.

The author assumes that the construction of the new drugstore is the only recommendation as the responding to the possible trends that the profits might increase. Nonetheless, the author totally ignores some other choices such as develop health projects that help local people improve their health with the advice of some doctors and enable them buy the rights, which may be more appealing to the customers. To better convince me, the author must provide more reference to back the suggestion.

To sum up, the author weakly bolster the opinion that the profits next year will rise up and opening a new drugstore is the best response. More evidence should be included in order to better operate the purpose, such as the demands booms enough to cover the cost of new drugstore, the other alternatives are not equally effective to the author’s suggestion and so forth.
