TOPIC: ARGUMENT127 - The vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president."In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits."

In the memo,the arguer recommend that Climpson Industries should adopted the regulation that monitor the empoyees' Internet use form their workstations.However,several fallacies render it unconvoncing as it stands.
Initially, it is unpersuasive that the our staff waste much of working time and lead our productivity lower.However,the author fails to provide evidence to support his conclusion.Lacking these information we can legitimately assume that our could complete their job in time with high quality .Even assuming that our staff wasting a lot of time and our productivity is not enough high,we cannot assert the abuse of Internet should responsible for these problems.As we know many other alternative factors can influence on the productivity,such as the working environment.Perhaps the working environment is not well that leads many of staffs cannot concentrate on their work.Or perhaps the staff waste a lot of time on the way to the company as a result always be late.In short, without ruling out all these possibilities,I'm not convinced that the use of Internet should responsible for the low productivity.
Moreover,even assuming that the abuse of Internet did lower our productivity ,we cannot draw the conclusion that after the regulation that employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be punished take into action,our staff reduce their number of work hours spend on personal or recreational activities.First,many employees use Internet to deal with their work,such as search data with respect to their work,send E-mail to customers .If so , the new regulation will make actually lower the productivity.secondly ,it is entire possible that after this regulation,our staff becoming less use the workstations to access the Internet for personal recreational activities,but they may use their own facilities connect to the Internet,such as the cellphone.They use their iphone to surf Internet and recreational activities ,in which they cannot be find by the company.As no regulation is imposed on other activities in their working time, perhaps they deal with other personal activities without Internet,such listen to the music or go shopping .
Finally,even if all the hypothesis are in real situation, the author's conclusion that by installing software to detect empoees' Internet use on company competers, they can prevent employees from wastiong time,foster a better work ethic at Climpson ,and improve their overall profits is unwarranted. For two aspects,first, by this the staff may hold an disgusted attitude towards the company for the reason the company do not trust them and even monitor them.As a consequense,this may lead a worse work ethic,a lower mrale.Secondly,the author fails to take other uncontrollable factors into consideration.Such as the economic situation.If this case ,our profits may decrease.In short,without ruling out these possibilitie,the author cannot draw the conclusion that the company will benefits a lot.
In sum, the recommendation is not well supported.To stregthen the recommendation,the author should provident more information about whether the abuse of Internet did lower their productivy.To better assess it ,I need know more about the staffs' thought. |
