Issue 167 it is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time. Complete honesty is not useful virtue for a politician.
The speaker alleges that complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politican for the reason that a effective politician can not tell the truth all the time . Although usually the politician is required honesty to face the citizenry as to his or her motives and agenda, on balance i agree that a effective politician does not need complete honesty, since the honesty is not the criterion of a successful political leader.
One reason for my fundamental agreement with the speaker is that a politician's job is to build, maintain, and expand the wealth, prosperity and political influence of his nation, district, country, state. This is his or her prime concern. Moreover, the criterion of a effective leader is whether or not the politician can fulfill these obligation, other than be honesty or not We should realize that attaining those goals require them to make choices that are outside the boundary of morality. Thus, in order to gain and maintain the political leadership to severe the ultimately interests of the public, some measure of pandering the electorate and the one who can provide the financial suppotrt is necessary, and some dishonest means to fulfill the politician's job is permissible.
Another reason for my agreement lies in the fact that the complete honesty is not effective at all in politics , in addition, nobody can be honest to any individual if he is viewed as a politician. In the first place, consider, for instance, if the president Bush would be honest to answer how the US get the information as well as the army's strategies to deal with the terrorists who plotted the 9.11 terror, it will surely fail. In the second place, a politician must be loyalty to the stages or the country which he or she representatives, and if the politician always be honest to the other stages or the country, it is doubtful whether he or she can be elected by his electorate.
Have recognized that the inherent nature of politics asks for a certain amount of dishonesty, however this dishonesty may lies in the means and process to the ultimate goal, it is no doubt that legitimate political leadership requires honest with the citizenry as to the leader's motives and agenda. In other words, moral leaders think in terms of a obligation approach to honesty, while the political leader thinks in terms of consequence or a utilitarian approaches to honesty. For example, dealing with the economical crisis in 2008, China put four thousand billion RMB to boost the market, the politician should be honest to tell how the four billiion was distributed.
In conclusion, dishonest is often necessary to gain the political power and to sever the interests of the public given that the inherent nature of politics.
And be honest or not is indeed not the criterion of a effective leader. However, in any democratic society a politician should be honest to tell the citizenry his political motives and goals, otherwise he would ultimately forfeit his leadership.
