TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

Actually,more and more people think that science should contribute to the larger society.And,Nature magazine also points that science relies on the support of public.According the above words,we can get a conclusion that scholars and researchers should contribute to the larger society.This recommendation seems correct,however,it cannot be deeply analysised.The point is the word "conribution",because,the word of "contribution"
has many sides in social view.Moreover,no any standards can astimate which sience subjects makes more contribution to society and which don't.So, the only answer is that  scholars and researchers  pursue their individual interests.
It is undeniable that ,some science disciplines have obvious benifits on the development of society,even,some subjects were founded for contributing to the society and solving some questions.These disciplines can make benefits for human in a short term,so,goverment and insititutes inject much energy ,fund and material to help the scholars to study these kinds of problems.For example,scientists are researching the approaches of solving enviromental problems for reducing the effection of  enviromental problems from people.For another instance,the medicine researching by scholars is for solving the diseases of human.Human must rely on some science disciplines that can make a contribution to the larger society to solve some questions we meet in our common life and offer safegard for our life.
The above is the short-term of "contribution",however,the 'contribution' of scientists is most long-term and is difficultly judged and acknowleged by cotemporary.The value of long-term 'contribution' can be acknowleged after a  long time.However,the knowlege of people is limited,we cannot judge that which kinds of researches will have value in the future and which don't.So,we cannot have ability to assess which study of today will have contribution to the larger society in the future.
The approach of solving the above  problems is that scholars and reseachers study and research with their individual interests.The individual interests of scientists are an important factors that they do study work.First,individual interests make scientists fall over themselves of their researches.If,one field that scholars are not interesting  will exhaust their energy and positivity in a short term and the scientists are also easy to make flaws and mistakes in researches.Second,the fact that scientists can choose study fields according their interestes will encourage more creativity,far-sight
scientists to do these studies of benefitting on the sustainable development of human and keep the development of society with long-term stability.On the contrary,let all scientists do the several subjects that can be made a contribution to the larger society in a short
term,althouth can solve society problems quickly,it will make negative and disturctive effection on the development  of society and human in the future.
To sum up,every scientists have right to choose study fields according their individul interests,just as every person have right to wear clothing that we love.In the long run, all scientists are available,not only including these new science disciplines to solve the problems of society in a short term,but also these science disciplines that don't have obvious effects and benefits on human in a short term,even unusual or idiosyncratic researches.
