题目:ARGUMENT26 - The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda.
"For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system."

In this argument, the chairperson cites the fact that Steel City High won regional band competitions sequent for three years and the music facilities are improved. Based on which, the chairperson assumes that it is Mr. Charles's effort that makes the music education develops a lot. Hence, the chairperson recommends hiring Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system. The argument seems relatively sound, however, is suffered from several logical flaws.

To begin with, the chairperson unfairly assumes that Mr. Schade is credited for the Steel City High's achievement in winning three regional band awards. The chairperson overlooks a host of possibilities may accounting for these phenomena, for example, the school band got these rewards before Mr. Schade being the director; thus, Mr. Schade did nothing contributing the achievement. Moreover, it might also be the high quality of facilities that causes the school band stands out among other competitions. Unless the chairperson can convince us these scenarios are impossible, hardly can we accept that Mr. Schade's ability in improving the school band's music playing skills.

Also, even if we concede that the award that Steel City High approaches is attributable to Mr. Schade’s ability and effort, it is nevertheless unfair to infer that he has the ability to plan and direct the general music education programs. Yet, this might not be the case since the director and the administrator are two kinds of jobs essentially different; perhaps Mr. Charles is not good at planning and directing the music education programs at all; or cannot manage the whole education programs effectively. If it is the fact, we may suspect that Mr. Charles is not suitable for this position and the result will be not as satisfied as the chairperson proposed before.

Finally, the chairperson, without any evidence, presumes that there are no other possible candidates for this position. Lacking information about other options, there might be other individuals who have a thorough understanding of the education and a strong ability in management. Since the chairperson fails to eliminate this alternative possibility in the election, we remain unconvinced based on the only candidate—Mr. Charles listed in the argument.

Taken together, the above argument is not well reasoned as it stands and renders it lacks credibility. To bolster it, the chairperson must provide details about Mr. Charles' ability in direct and plan the education programs. To reevaluate it, we also need to know other candidates that fit for this job. Thus, the argument will be thorough and acceptable.
