In the statement, the speaker claims that something of lasting value is given by the artist but not the critic. With such an assertion, I basically agree, because artists have not only created numerous works which make our lives colorful and thus interesting, but also left very precious treasure to a society. Of course, I concede that the critics, if with conscientious spirit and profound knowledge, would be considerably helpful to a society.
The first reason why I agree with the statement is that many kinds of masterpieces by the artists are often very beneficial to people's lives and the enhancement of their qualities. Consider the benefits from the films, for example, the works by Marlon Brando, not only do we oftentimes admire his excellent performing techniques, but also we can learn some truths about life which might give us valuable things in his movies.
Or, consider the example of Elvis Presley, one of the first artists with contributions to the improvement and spread of Rock and Roll which continues to the present as a popular music style.
Another reason which lends more credence to the statement lies that the artists have created many works of great significance which improve the history of the human culture. One example which aptly illustrates this point involves with the masterpieces by Shakespeare. His prolific works indicate his exploration of various types of drama--love, death, power, and these themes are expressed in his comedies, tragedies, romances, and histories. It is indisputable that his works made a great contribution to human cultural history, not to mention the lasting value to a society.
On the other hand, when it comes to critics, some of their function should not be neglected. However, this point should be considered on a case-by-case basis. A critic, if hoping to have some values left to a society, has to possess an attitude with objective and equality in the term of his or her work. Besides, it is very necessary to have broad and deep knowledge which is at least relevant to the field where he would make criticism, rather than simply understanding some 'critic techniques'.
In the final analysis, without the artists, our society would become boring and less vivid considering the lack of various distinguished works. To some larger extent, it is their works which give this society something valuable. Meanwhile, in some sense, the qualified critic of arts usually brings us more inspiration and some clues for artists, thus ensuring that the arts creators might be keeping in a right track.
