In the recent decades, more and more people care about the importance of education. Does the society pay enough attention to the intellect as the common recognition? In my view, the society is indeed invest a great deal into the education of intelligence, however, through which cannot contribute enough to the cultivation of the reasoning and other cognitive skills. Moreover, it is the education of emotions and feelings that is overlooked by both the parents and the schools.
Education serves as the foundation of the advancement of the whole society, while the intellect training plays an irreplaceable role in the process of education. Admittedly, the government has laid an awful lot of stress on the intellectual education. A typical example to support the above statement is the International Mathematics Olympiads, a worldwide competition for high school students. Based on the demand for cognitive, reasoning, and analytical skills, mathematics is apparently one of the most effective methods to enhance one’s intellect level; nations all over the world set math learning as a required course all along from primary school to college.
However, the recent conception of teaching focuses more about the consequence of an examination than the real skills obtained through the education itself. In other words, contemporary educators may not draw to a correct direction and appreciate sufficiently to the process of training students as logical and creative individuals. Conversely, it is nothing but the ability to remember notes in a short time that can the students gain from the education. Such a bias in education might be counterproductive and lead to various negative effects whether at the level of science or social science. In the field of science, for example, there would never be a spacecraft or the theory of relativity without innovation. Similarly, in the realm of social science, only by a logical analysis about the precious experience of economic crisis can an economist gives birth to a better emergency response facing with a new economic attack. In the political circle, any reformation of the current system would not emerge without great creativity and huge courage. According to the above instances, the reasoning and cognitive skills resulted from IQ education are of significant value.
Turning to another stressful concept of EQ---Emotional Quotient—regarding a person's ability to understand his own emotion and those of others, and to act appropriately using these emotions. History is filled with the examples that unless having a high level in EQ, an individual might find it difficult to attain the final success or significant achievement. Coupled with one's emotion quotient are the communication and interpersonal skills, the performance when coming across frustrations and failures, the control and management of own feelings, and so forth. Companies have a stronger demand for the graduates with above skills than specialists in mere aspects such as scientific research and technological development. Just take what Danniel Goorman, a Harvard professor, said into consideration:' EQ is a determining factor of the success in life'. Similarly, Peter Dructor once claimed that he would never promote a man into a top-level job who had not made mistakes because one without the experience of overcoming obstacles was sure to be mediocre. In short, the EQ and the critical abilities associated with it are undoubtedly valuable to both the society and the individuals, while educators always fail to lay enough emphasis upon them.
To sum up, it is essential to place emphasis on the improvement of the contemporary education. Therefore the authorities should take both the intellectual and non-intellectual skills into account, and then build a balanced and integrated education system. Since the nature of education is to bring people with their own thoughts and ideas, the intellectual and non-intellectual education are regarded as equally important.
