Some people accuse nonmainstream areas as evil and against scientific experiments, while I am convinced that such areas like astrology and paranormal phenomena analysis can sufficiently help people in many ways by comforting them and satisfying their needs for curiosity, security and pursuit of miracles which cannot be(+sufficiently)met by mainstream science.
Nonmainstream areas’ first contribution is its comforting power. Struggling to learn about unknown imposes great anxiety on people, and nonmainstream areas serve as placebo to them. People are curious about the mysterious causal relations in the world. In ancient times when mainstream sciences were just fragmentary, people were ignorant about the origin of the planet and many natural phenomena like volcano eruption or shooting stars which they regarded as punishment of the God. They resorted to nonmainstream areas like religion or myths for explanations and found proper ways to react—ritual sacrifice, exorcism or pray. These reacts are actually psychological protection mechanism of human nature without which people will sink into the abysm of fear and helplessness, so much as social turmoil.(突然又纠结了一下:啥叫非主流?
Even till the latest decades when contemporary science has reached an unprecedentedly high level, still there exist some unfolding mysteries in our daily life. Why we meet certain people in a certain place at a certain time? Chinese superstitious version of the answer is "Yuan", Indian version is "karma", and western version may be serendipity or luck. All of these are nearly the same thing of leaving this question to agnosticism, but are wildly accepted over the world because no scientifically examined answer could be reached.
People are also curious about the unknown future. The essence of knowledge lies in its power to predict, especially to predict people’s future. Unfortunately, there’s no such science named future-prediction. People would not like to wait in fear and trembling all day long worrying about what the tomorrow has for them, whereas nonmainstream areas employed certain fantastic methods to predict the future—the alignment of stars, the stochastic sortilege and such. This explains the popularity of fortune-telling---sometimes we are really desperate to know in advance what will happen in the near future. Although the answers provided by astrology or fortune-telling may be nonsense at all, they do have assuring effect on people who believe it by giving some indications and time to prepare for surprise or calamity.
(The most powerful comforting effect of nonmainstream areas comes from religion which satisfies the ultimate human needs—the reason to be alive. Different religious system provided various explanations to questions that cannot be answered by pure science. Even some scientists are interested in religious explanations when their wisdom ran out. Prestigious as Darwin, who invented the evolutionism, turned to religion when he was bereft of his beloved daughter. Darwin could not understand why he had to bear so much suffering, only in mysterious religion could he found some comfort to his sorrow. In this sense, nonmainstream fields act as sanctuary to people’s fear and desperation.)
The second sphere of nonmainstream areas’ contribution to society is the inspiration they provide. As mentioned above, nonmainstream areas do provide explanation to questions, plausible or lame, which usually lack empirical evidence and are doubted by skeptics. But skepticism is just the impetus for new science, those who doubted the nonmainstream explanation will seek to disprove it and find more logical answers. For example, paranormal mysteries like Crop circles still puzzle us, some say they are creation of aliens, now they are being studied by a bunch of scientists and are hopefully to be solved in the future. Those nonmainstream explanations give people some clues to explain the mysteries and inspire people and scientist to further analysis the cases and eventually unveil the myth. Maybe in the near future, we will find that then nonmainstream areas become mainstream sciences(仍然忍不住要建议上例子= =仍然忍不住就想到了炼金术到化学= =囧我惯性思维了么).
In sum, although nonmainstream knowledge may temporarily lack scientific support, their merits of satisfying people’s curiosity and sheltering them from fear can never be erased. Moreover, they are motivations for people to make progress in science. That’s why I am convinced that nonmainstream plays a vital role in human society.
就是People are also curious about the unknown future那段)的主题句还可以改下,把非主流能提供安慰这个意思包括进去是否好些? |
