The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare.



The absence and present of choices both exist, whether absence or present of choice depends on who decides the results. Admittedly, on the irreversible journey from birth to death, we truly have no choice about birth, death, time flowing, diseases. Living on the earth, we also have no choice of earthquake, flood, heat waves, drought and other natural stuff. That is because we human beings have no right to determine. However, grounding on the situations which we have the last say, the absent choice is very rare.

To begin with, many choices are obvious that everyone could meet. On the menu of restaurants there are many food for chosen; in the store, there are many products for chosen; in the hotel, there are many rooms for chosen. Moreover, in the paths of our lives, we always face plenty of choices. Graduated from high school, we should make a choice of furthering education or finding a job; decided to further education, we should make a choice among all the colleges and universities; decided to work, we should make a choice about which job to do. At any given point of our lives, the situations of choice present in frequency.

In addition, ample choices are concealed in our daily lives, some of which may not be regarded as choices because so insignificant they are that people ignore. In the morning, we choose when to get up; when we go to work, we choose what transportation to take; when we start work, we choose which one to be first done; when we get off work and arrive home, we choose watching TV, cleaning, reading books or do something else. Someone may argue that I haven’t chosen, I’m getting used to get up at 7:30. Just remembering the first day to work, you set the alarm clock, and chose 7:30am as the time you get up. Day after day, it becomes a custom of your life style, and you forget that you had chosen it at first. The truth is that the choice present everyday, but you ignore it because you already have made the decision.

Furthermore, some choices are covered under the strong reason of “have to do” which some people claim as absence of choice. It seems that when you say “I have to work” means you have no choice but work. Actually, you do have the right to choose the other option – not to work—before you decided to. Although you’re willing to have a rest or take a vacation, the strong reason, earn a livelihood, convinces you that it’s better for you to go to work. Even in some serious situations which someone say “have to do”, the choices still present. For example, in a rubbery, the rubber tells you to give him all your cash with a gun pointed to your head. You must say that you have to give money to him. In fact, you still have the other option to say no. But you weigh the values between life and money, the results of obedience and disobedience, and then you make the choice. The cause of those situations is the options of these choices are so unfair just as life and money that you can easily figure out which is more important at the first glance. But you can not deny that the choices exist.

In sum, among the circumstances can be determined by human beings, choices are full of our lives, although some of them are ignored or covered under unfair options. The absence of choice is very, very rare.
