TOPIC: ARGUMENT1 - The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.
"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age."

The author believes that Nature's Way could build their next new store in Plainsville, because there are many residents who are concerned with healthy lives. He also supports his idea with some statistics. However, I find this opinion unpersuasive, because of the fallacies below.

First of all, although citizens would like to purchase running shoes and exercise clothing, and being health club member, it does not necessarily mean that they care about leading healthy lives. Perhaps, sports clothing and shoes are cheaper, and of higher quality than other types of clothing and shoes. For that matter, they are likely not interested in healthy lives. In addition, the number of club members is also not representative to their concerns. For instance, the club might develop to help people in Plainsville get together and discuss about current topics or else. In that way, the health club could also be popular among citizens. Therefore, the statistics may not necessarily lead to the conclusion that people care about healthy lives.

In addition, the anticipation of a new generation is not convincing, too. Students who are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program might turn out to hate healthy lives when they grow up. Also, it is likely that the program would fail to lead them into a healthy life when they become adults, since there is a long period between the program and there adulthood. In this sense, they will not be potential customers.
What is more, even if the two opinions above is tenable, people who want to lead healthy lives may not buy healthy food, let along buying Nature's Way. There are many ways to live healthily. Perhaps they would like to do exercises regularly and eating healthy and natural food, like vegetables. And the number of health club convinces us more as they would like to exercise. In that case, selling Nature's Way in Plainsville could hardly be profitable.

In conclusion, even providing such statistics, it is still lack of evidence that Nature's Way could benefit a lot from building a new chain store in Plainsville. To further convince me, the author should provide detailed information about the purpose of residents buying sports clothing and shoes, and going to the health club, and their willingness of purchasing Natural's Way.
