TOPIC: ISSUE96 - "Although, critics who write about the arts tend to deny
the existence of any objective standards for evaluating works of art, they
have a responsibility to establish standards by which works of art can be
judged."

正文:
What makes art so intriguing? Is some paints' value higher than others? Is
there any standard to evaluate them? These puzzling questions had been left
to human beings when there is art. In fact, since each individual has its
unique understanding of beauty, there may be no such standard satisfying
everyone. This view that art has no standard is actually popular nowadays,
but with it there is such a byproduct that a great many artists air their
ordinary stuff and try to let the audiences believe that their productions
are masterpieces whether they virtually are or not.

Admittedly, everyone would have its own standard to judge art productions.
Maybe one would think Beethoven is the greatest musician all over the
history but some minority may think he was just trying venting his mood;
and there are so many people adoring Claude Monet's paint as fans of
impressionism but there would be some person thinking impressionism is just
one of the common skills to object the classic pattern. Anyone has its
favorite and may be able to make large amounts of comments to support it.
On the other hand, others may acquiesce just for polite and in fact they
are able to object that opinion with strong evidence. These are common
scenes when discussing on art.

However, many people who want to be branded as "artist" is trying to make
use of this psychology. They simply create their productions following
their wish or mood without considering any aesthetic aspects. As soon as
they finished their works, those "artists" would show their works without
any embellishing. Surely, whether those productions are masterpieces or
just some graffito, there will be both positive and negative comments. The
percentage of these comments should be determined by the aesthetic ability
of the whole society or just some small groups of people having visited
that show. To those positive comments the "artist" is likely to be very
glad and to the negative ones a common attitude is "buddy, you may enjoy it
from another view". Since nowadays the point of view that art has no
standard is so popular that critics actually have little words to refute
that. So the phenomenon that the art world is full of graffito could be
imaginable.

Actually there should be a standard to filter graffito and in earlier years
such standards seems existing. In classic periods, it is not difficult to
make a judgment to art productions. Lifelikeness is the most important
standard to judge paints; euphony is the most common standard used to judge
music; And reality as well as grandness is the basic requirement of great
sculptors. When art came to impressionism, it seems to be a little harder
to make judgment but closing to the great nature is always what an
impressionist pursues. Nevertheless, when art came to surrealism, it would
be very difficult to grasp what artists want to express except for
insiders. Picasso, Dali's masterpieces are always trying to express
something subconscious and an ordinary person may be very hard to
understand except she or he gets sufficient education in psychology and
beauty. So art seems to be hardly understood for an ordinary person from
that time until now. Nevertheless, although art nowadays is obscure, there
impressionism. Artistic critics who have discourse power and keep a large
amount of artistic knowledge are the best colony to do this.

In sum, it is undoubted that everyone could have its own opinion of beauty,
but to establish a realizable mechanism to filter graffito, there should be
an aesthetic standard for ordinary people. Artistic critics who possess
sufficient art knowledge should take this responsibility to establish a
suitable one.
