Topic 4. "No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study."

The study of certain fields will always be stuck into quagmire when it has developed into a comparatively high level, for the situation becomes more and more intricate and narrow during the process. At such time, the knowledge and experience brought by people, who are outsiders of this circle will inspire and illuminate this field. Some typical examples of certain fields could well illustrate this question.

Set the area of archeology as an example. Considering an archeologist’s knowledge is enhanced not by the limited cultural civilization. Indeed, the depth and width of archeological knowledge will be enhanced by chemists, biologists, geologists, linguistics, and even historians. The chemists could analyze the ingredients of relics, such as----swords, bowls. Then determine what they are made of during the developing manufacture.
By analyzing the hairs and bones and nails of mummified bodies, biologists could point out the life-expectancy, the most probable cause of death, and the nutrition distribution in the body. By carefully checking the terrain of relic sites, geologists could identify the specific materials made up of articles----thereby archeologists could speculative based on this information to determine the perverse economy, market, and well-fare situations. Also, linguistics could help archeologists indentify the degree of cultural prosperity during that time, by pointing out the words and literature forms. That is to say, a process of working a project out is a process combining myriads of factors and several kinds of knowledge from outsiders together.


When comes to the field of computer engineering. The situation seems not much easier than the former field. Thinking about the 1970s, the software had been suffering from a server predicament. Although soft wares could be applied to army manufacturing, mathematic calculating and solving problems encountered in natural science, one obstacle is that it could not work systematically. This obstacle had been moved until knowledge of managing and statistics brought into this field. Consequently, pull it out of deadlock. It is not hard to imagine, without the knowledge of management and statistic, the software we using today will not be able to cover almost all problems we encounter in daily life, and work in such an efficient and systematically manner. Meanwhile, without the technology of other fields the computer engineering cannot stand at a higher status to view what they could do for the whole society, and thus the indispensable progress can hardly been made. As a certain industry becomes mature, its potential always cannot easily unearthed by members who are confined in the field, usually with the help provided by experts from other fields can they find their way to progress.

When we talking about the benefits of introduce outside knowledge, it is impossible to mention the art. The spirit to express art in every field is almost the same---to show feelings and emotions. Admittedly, too much outside information invades a certain area can prohibit this area from concentrating to its own issues or problems. For those physical scientists, like Einstein, Feynman and hawking, they simply can utilize their imagination to reveal the hidden regulations of the miraculous world and then establish the abstract theory alone, without any help from other filed, for their study can hardly be related with other subjects. In such cases, information from other is actually troubling them rather than provide them any help.



In sum, the author’s assertion is generally reasonable and should be accepted by nearly all the members of a certain field, except for those who are in the circle which are separated too seriously with other fields.
