TOPIC:ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."
I quite disagree with the statement in the issue because basically the experience and knowledge indicate that looking back not only guides the present, but also helps us to know ourselves.
First of all, there are many present things which are the same as they were in the past, such as some famous architecture styles, athletic items, and etc. In the history of human beings, we always preserve the glorious and great achievements which make our lives better. For example, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NewYork City was founded in 1870 by a group of American citizens, applying the classic Gothic style which is the same style as Kolner /Koeln Dom in Germany, which started to be built in 1248(这个分句分词形式从句怎么写 这样写——applying the classic Gothic style,(此处用同位语) the same one used by Kolner /Koeln Dom started to be built in 1248in Germany,
). This kind of persistence in art style is a common sight in the society and it preserves the valuable accomplishments in the history. Another exampleis in the sports are. There are many athletic items, like football, track andfield 田径, last for more than one hundredyears, some items even over one thousand years. Moreover, the rise of modern sports made the Greek have the idea of resuming the Olympic Games, which wasthe prevailing entertainment in ancient time. If we had not looked back at thepast, we would not have found these valuable things in the history to enrichour lives.
Secondly, modernization is the evolvement of tradition which has developed successively(successively接连地
而不是成功地) in the history. Today, we get used to the American English in U.S. and many international occasions. However, in the present American English, traditional English language takes(play) a dominant role, while it does not lead the other language to fall into extinction, such as French, Spanish, Italian, and soforth. Etymologists study the history to find some helpful clues to explain various language phenomena(phenomena 是常用的复数形式) nowadays, and this kind of researches is(单数用is)/researches of this kind are(复数用are)always processed by looking backward.
Thirdly, there are many useful experiences(要就不用are ;不然跟我加s!!!) from the past can be used in thepresent, and looking back can avoid make the same mistakes. The experience of controlling epidemic diseases helps we respond to the spreading of SARS, a mutated new coronavirus appeared to have started in Guangdong of China in November2002. Without the immediate quarantine approach处理方法 studied from numerous epidemics accidents in the history, the SARS might have caused disasters in many countries. The business experience is also useful knowledge.According to the experience passed through hundreds of years, trades are swifter than before and the businessmen know how to make their trading reasonable, such as exchanging Indiacurry, Chinese tea, and Arab spices are profitable jobs in business.
Finally, the most valuable guidance provided by looking back for an understanding of the past is the method of refreshing our minds on the consequence of the development in society. Nowadays, many literature works are becoming the entertainment pieces like vulgar庸俗的 fictions and magazines; abusing of science achievements triggers引起 disasters to the world; and the development of technology makes our lives more taxing繁忙的 than ever before -- while they are in order to create better lives for human. At these crazing(自己查查) circumstances, we need to find out the original purpose in the past time, where literature used to pass on knowledge, recording thinking, and preach the gospel; science came from the purpose of exploring the world andaiming at creating better lives; and people wanted to have more leisure from the developing of technology. When we are lost or stray on the way of development, retracing the past teaches us a lot about the initial objectives.
To sum up, due to the above mentioned reasons, with the help of understanding the past, the present inherit the former achievements, develop the cultures, and are also guided for living in the present. What's more, looking back on thehistory makes human refreshing the original purpose of development in thesociety. |
