TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.
"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

Grounding on a comparison between Green Mountain College (GMC) and Mira Vista College (MVC) in the last year on the employment, and citing the GMC owns more business courses and more job counselors than MVC, the president of MVC synthesizes that offering more courses in business and computer technology and employing additional job counselors can ameliorate students' resumes and improve their interviewing skills and thus help them find employment. However, after close scrutiny reveals this argument rests on several flaws as it stands.
In the first place, the writer fails to consider that the last year is an aberration, while in the most years the employment in MVC is higher than GMC. Perhaps, during the last year, many alumni from GMC have recommended their companies to employ their schoolmates, so the rate of the employment in the MVC rises to 90 percent, while on average is 60 percent lower than GMC, so there is no necessary to learn from the MVC.
In the second place, even though in the most years that the rate of the employment in MVC is higher than GMC, the writer still provides no evidence to justify his assumption that the well employment is the consequence of the business courses and job counselors. There are many potential possibilities for the high employment, for examples, the reputation of the GMC is considerably notable and then their students can gain better jobs, or perhaps, some certain majors instead of business are preeminent, and thus these students are more likely to get the employments. Without ruling out the possibilities, the writer can not convince us that the high employment in GMC is the result of the more business courses and job counselors.
Furthermore, even though the well employment in GMC is the consequence of the business courses and job counselors, the writer still too hasty to conclude that the similar result will appear to MVC. The writer does not take the discrepancy between the two colleges into consideration which may bring the different result to MVC. Perhaps, there already exist many business courses and job counselors and thus adding more job counselors can only waste money and resource.
Finally, the writer fails to consider other feasible ways to improve the employment. The president can implement some strategies to encourage students to take more social practice, which can enhance students the comprehensive ability, or the president can ameliorate the educational system, which may bring the natural healing to the university.
In sum, this argument is based on several immature evidences and thus unconvincing. To bolster the argument, the writer must provide cogent evidence to justify that the employment in the GMC on average is higher than MVC, and the more business courses and the job counselors are the reason for the well employment. To better assess the argument, the writer should also give sufficient evidence to verify his assertion that the same consequence will appear to MVC when the MVC increases more business courses and computer technology courses and employs additional job counselors. |
