TOPIC: ISSUE120
- "So much is new and complex today thatlooking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance forliving in the present."
Whether the past provideslittle guidance for living in the present, as the speaker asserts? To someextent, I agree the statement that current issues are so new-fangled andcomprehensive compared with the issue in the past at least. However, throughanalyzing the preposition comprehensively and systematically, I realize thestatement extend to embrace that the past are not significance and even lossvalue for contemporary society. A multi-dimensional view is necessary toconsider this issue and I would prefer that absorbing the evaluation andlessons of
history and balancing therelationship between current issues and historical problem to being a betterpilot of current problems
Admittedly, under somecircumstance, this is especially true current society is confronted with thevarious challenge in a rapid changing world shaped by globalization andmodernization. On the one hand, the problems in the past seem clearly to bepale and simple compared with current problems fraught with comprehensiveness, unique and multi-dimensional difficulty such as the economic problem, thebiological controversy or the nuclear issue. A example aptly illustrates thispoint involved economic crisis in 2006 stemming from US.
The collapse of a global housing bubble inthe United State caused the values of securities tied to real estate pricing toplummet thereafter, damaging financial institutions globally. It is considered bymany economists to be the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression ofthe 1930s while the comprehensiveness and spreading speed surpass the GreatDepression.
On the other hand, somenew-fangled and unique issue burst into society without any experience andlesson of history, such as computer crime and human cloning. Computer crime asa new issue stems from application of computer and human cloning as acontroversial issue involves in social morality and ethnics, which are regardedas the unique issue in 21st.
Even though the excellence ofthe statement is rather obvious, however, it is vital and crucial to analyzehistory which provide precious and valuable warns and imperative lessons.History, a science or a liberal art, polishes our nature and soul while improvevalues, ethics and self-worth of human originally with the need for a writingsystem while remain telling many practical stories which are crucial andessential for current society. For one thing, the imperative lessons of historystimulate us to immerge ourselves into effort on the race to attain goals.Consider, the example offered before, economic crisis in 2006 bring the countryto the brink of collapse, but the authority suitably consider the serous lessonof the Great economic crisis and establish application and reform to avoid thefurther crisis. For other thing, no matter the past or the current, the natureand essence of issues are similar and besides, the past issue provides vividstories for humanity to analyzing the nature and exploiting the nature ofproblem. Crime such as traditional crime or computer crime aptly illustratesthe point. With the quickening tempo of modern life, humanity suffer fromvarious issues. If society can balance the past and current problem to exploita better way addressing the problem, human can be a better pilot of the life.
However, reconstructing thepast completely and accurately is not their purpose and seems to pale incompared with a design, purpose, directive principle, or finality in theprocesses of human history by analyzing objectively the patterns of cause andeffect that determine events including discussing the story of the disciplineas an end in itself and as a way of providing 'perspective' on the problems ofthe present.
Nonetheless, it seems to methe inherent relationship of the past and the current issue should be involvedin harmonious exchange and cooperation instead of mutual repulsion andconflict. The past and the present are mutually satisfactory in sparkinghumanity to immerge them into the effort to attain the goal.
To sum up, the statementoverrates the comparative importance of the history at least. Without theinspiration of history, society will be blind to the potential problem and lossthe valuable property; without the critical thinking and reconstructing thehistory based on current problem, the history will be pale in the problem. |
