ISSUE60 - "The media-and society in general-mistakenly expect an individual to speak for a particular group, whether or not that individual truly represents the views of the entire group."
In the modern world, frequently someindividuals get interviewed and then their opinions are treated as the mainperspectives of the entire group which the individuals are in. However, although individual opinion is the basis of the opinion of a group, individualopinion cannot represent the whole group for that individual opinion can varyin different ways.
To begin with, different living conditionwill lead to the individual opinion. Growth environment, for example, is themain influential element to one's opinion. People in one group may havedifferent growth experiences which provides people different outlook to theworld. Assuming two people with different growth experience are in the sameposition in government. The one grow up in slum may be willing to improve theliving condition of poor people. On the contrary, the one grow up in wealthyfamilies may be willing to improve law and order.
Secondly, individual opinion may be basedon one’s distinctive character. Qiu Yi, a member of Kuomintang in Taiwan, alwayshas different opinions which are against other committee member of Kuomintangbecause of his uniquely straightfoward character. He is courageous to expresshis special perspective which may offend the profits of other officials ingovernment.
At last, people with different need ordesire will have different opinions to one event even if they are in the samegroup. For instance, in my hometown, people who lose jobs may expect the governmentto build more factories to provide them the working opportunities.Nevertheless, people who wish healthier lives may expect the government to shutdown more factories to make a fresher atmosphere.
Based on the reasons above, individualopinion is only the representation of personal willingness. Therefore, the mainopinion of the entire group is more important for the reason that it representsfor more people. Mistakenly emphasizing on individual opinion will lead towrong judgment by misunderstanding the main trend. In that case, when decisionis needed, careful investigations to the main opinion of the entire group isindispensable.
Admittedly, the main opinion of a group ismore significant than individual opinions. However, it is individual opinionsmake up the main opinion of a group. As a result, individual opinions shouldnever be neglected. If the economic crisis is making few banks go bankrupt, thesignificance of the crisis must be taken seriously, otherwise, more companiesmay be the sacrifice of the crisis.
In sum, individuals cannot represent an entiregroup, the individual opinion is only the component of the opinion of thegroup. But still individuals should not be neglected, the individual opinion isan indispensable component of the opinion of the group.
