Science, a comprehensive subject that mainly leads technologies to advance, improves the living condition of humans. Art, conveying various forms to express artists' emotions and ideas, improve people's mental conditions. However, science and arts both have their negative effects on society. Therefore, they provide both the reassure and the upset.

Science development is an increasingly useful method to reassure society materially. Nowadays, people increasingly enjoy the benefits from the progresses of science and technologies. For individuals, one is able to get informed of whatever is going on in the world without stepping out home; one could save hours by getting housework done by machines. When it comes to work, workers nowadays usually monitor the operations of machines instead of doing work by themselves; doctors know more accurately about patients’ physical conditions thanks to the utilization of precise measurements. In a word, science and technologies bring about convenience and efficiency to everyone's daily life, as well as society as a whole.

On the other hand, Arts, with different forms and styles reassure people by providing a variety of feelings and ideas to them and enriching their physical lives. First, arts have an impact on one's feelings, no matter what artists want to express. For instance, Mona Lisa's mysterious smile mystifies people simply through they watching the paintings; Eiffel Towel renders a shock to whoever visits it; Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 amuses people by its innovative chorus and sole voices. Second, great art works also force people to thinking insightfully and deeply. Literature is one of the most typical examples. Poets with rhythms provide the beauty of ambiguity and philosophy, novels shows the charm of characters and plots, requiring readers' consideration of destiny; essays present the changes of authors' thoughts and the feelings about nature.

However, science and art both could not avoid the function of upset. Science has always been described as a double-sides sword, for its disastrous power in wars and environment pollutions. Atomic bombs killed tens of millions of people in Japan during World War II; the emission from industries has thinned the ozone layer and accelerated the melting speed of icebergs.

And art could produce more confusing works, which upsets people. Artists can be powerful by expressing negative emotions to the public. Recently the movie Avatar depressed a lot of audiences, some of who even tried to commit suicide to escape from the reality.

Therefore, art and science can both be upset and reassure.
