When enjoying the beauty of Mona Lisa, we always regard it as Leonardo da Vinci's contribution. There is, however, another role as important as artist--critic, which we used to ignore. A valuable art work cannot be created, discovered and lasted without either artists or critics.


Art, as an expression of imagination and creativity, is mostly regards as artists' products. Based on personal experience or contemporary life, it is a tool to output the ideas of the artists' through a high level. It requires not only fabulous skills of art creativity, but also deep understanding of life. As we can see sometimes, a moving song often goes with the miserable life of the composer. So an artwork with lasting value is hard to create, and as long as it appeared, emphasis is often put on its creator in this regard.


Meanwhile, the effects of critics cannot be ignored. For almost all works of art venerated were revealed by critics. A real critic has his own standard of art, which is established through training or experience, to view the art woks. Most of the critics are artists themselves. As a result, critics are capable of appreciating, understanding, and perceiving art on a highly cognitive level. Without critics, Van Gogh's works would be considered as children's doodle. Additionally, artists can improve his or her skills through critics' judgment, in order to create better art works of lasting value. Common sense tells us that one can hardly obtain any progress all by himself. Moreover, based on the fact mentioned above, critics of art could be viewed as a kind of art communication, and with this communication artists can improve his or her works for long period time-test.


As the nexus between the generals and the artists, critics take most of the responsibility for the lasting of the artworks. As the fact that critics can reach the same level with the artists, it is easy for them to explain the ideas of art works and assess the true value of them. The most direct way for the generals to understand a work of art is through critics. Otherwise, a brilliant work of art could be isolated and only accepted in a small group. For example, Niccolo Paganini's works are generally considered as the peak of the violin skills. Most of people regard it as impossible to play. But through critics, who are also musician themselves, we can enjoy the fantastic melody he created from the four strings.



To sum up, it is not only the artist, but also the critic, who gives society something of lasting value. Yet there are some critics serve for the contemporary society, great works of art cannot preserve long without both artists and critics.
