The speaker is wondering the value of history. Admittedly, for us average people, learning how the United states was built will not help us to operate a computer; and learning the story of Industry Revolution may of little use no help us to create a new Mp3. However, the history of human being can provide us many things that are much more important than these. So, the speaker obviously over debase the function of history.

The most precious tings concealed in history is the experiences and lessons of our precedents. As we know, life of each single one are so short that we can hardly experience enough things to prevent us making many mistakes. But through history, which is the story together of previous human, we get to know much what we can't experience by ourselves. As a result, it seems that our lives are expanded. The two World Wars may be a strong example to illustrate this point. Both World War One and World War Two bring us a serious damage in property death to millions. After this, most of us, at least the most wise ones, begin to believe that only in a peaceful world, all of us could develop a pretty society and live a happy life. Thus, today, we should try our best to stop any silly action such as wars, which destroy our own civilizations. Another example comes from China. During the late 19th and early 20th century, China were living in a extremely poor situation, along with the state being invaded by many western countries. These experience tell Chinese that, any one poor will be bullied by others, and only by open to the world can a country develop its economy and technology. As a result, a new, prosperous and strong China are coming to us. Accordingly, these lessons are indispensable when we go further, although we never know what will happen ahead, we can prevent us involving the same fault by learning history.

In addition, history tell us who we are, where we are from and even where we will go.  This knowledge not only satisfy our curiosity, but also give us a clear position in the world. For example, after knowing the prehistoric time of human, we know how the society of us was formed. After learning the Darwin's Evolution Theory, we begin to know the relationship between us and other species. In fact, this information is important for us when are changing the world,especially today,when more and more conflict appear between human and environment, also between human and many other lives in this planet.

Moreover, the history provide us with culture, which is the basic character of a society. Any nation has it special history and it is in the history, a nation form its culture and evaluation system. By learning history, later people pass on these ideals and thoughts that are necessary for a nation to maintain its distinction and oder. By learning history, American people could pass on its democratic spirit and keep the dream of pursuing freedom; by learning history, Chinese people learn how to devote their families and live their countries. History play a crucial role in forming the human nature.

From what has discussed above. History, although today, no longer provide us directly helpful information, it is still irreplaceable treasure of human. Thus, both in our school an our adult society, enough attention placed on history is necessary.
