TOPIC: ARGUMENT188 - A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.

===================================================
Among tons of difference between men and women, there is no surprise that pain tolerance is one of them. In this argument, by the study of wisdom teeth extract operation, the author conclude that kappa opioids should be the only pain mefication for women, and study should be procede for every kinds of medications on different gender. However, the information in this artical is too vague to draw this conclusion. With close scrutiny, we found that the wisdom teeth extrat study was quite questionable due to following reasons.
First of all, beside gender, other differences between those men and women could also expalin the difference between their feelings on pain. Such as age difference and healty situation. Without take these factor in to account, we can hastily generalized that different tolorance for pain is caused by gender.
Second, there is another obvious queation we can ask , are the people researcher chosed can represent all man and woman? It is possible that the number of subjucts might be insufficient to constitute a representative sample set. From existing information, we could not know further background of the paticipate.
Third, how to measure the level of pain? we can not know though the study. Just based on describtiom of paticipate, the actural gap of pain feeling might not existed. To assum that the report by patient can reflet their actual level of pain is unwarrant.
Last but not least, granted that pain medications should be prescribed discriminationly is an incomplete thought . Without the comparation study of the other pain killer medicine, we could never know kappa opioids is only and right one for female group. What's more , and the necessity of reevaluationg the effects of all medications on men versus women is not causual.
To sum up, even though the different between gender are undiniable, without more detail information, we can not trust the arguer's conclusion so hasty . |
