In this letter, the chairperson attempts to convince the president of Pierce University to put more investment in offering employment to the spouse of each new faculty member they hire in order to attract more talented researchers and professors to their school. His suggestion is based on the studies conducted by Bronston College, which reveal that all professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. The argument seems quite reasonable at the first blush, however, after a close scrutiny, one will find the flaws included in the reasoning.

To start with, the author fails to solidify the result of the studies. How did BC conducted these studies? Can the employees of the studies represent the general idea of professors? Maybe these professors never worked other places expect that small town. Thus their opinion cannot represent opinions of professors from other places. Or maybe the questions in the studies were seducing for the employees to come to the expected answer. The author does not exclude the other possibilities concerning of the studies, thus the result cannot be necessarily true.

Moreover, there exists a false analogy in this argument. The conditions of the small town which BC located in are not entirely the same as that of the PU. For instance, the small town of BC is beautiful and good for living while the weather in the town of PU is very bad. Again the small town where BC located may has a convenient transportation system; the small town where Pu located was remote and hard to travel. Hence, the conditions of the mentioned two schools can also be distinctively different from each other. Bronston College probably is a prestigious college, which has nice research environment and hard-working students, whereas, Pierce University is just a common university in a tiny town. If so, even though PU offer employment to all teachers and researchers to their faculty, the perspective teachers would not accept the offer

For another thing, the author positively thinks that employing new researchers and teachers will definitely beneficial to the development of PU. The academic competence of a university is a comprehensive ability. Granting the possibility that new faculties may feel uncomfortable working in a strange place, they may contribute little to improving the morale of the entire staff.

All in all, the author needs more survey and analogy before he/she draws the conclusion to offer employment to the spouse of every new member. In fact, the investment can result in vain unless the overall academic competence of this university is improved. Instead of this, they may set up more scholarship to attract excellent students or use more money to renew the research facility.
