"It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value."

The speaker contended(contends,用一般现在时吧?) that it is not the critic, but the artist that gives society something of lasting value. In my view, however, it is true that those talented artists create their works to reflect social or natural phenomena they haveobserved, which exerts a profound influence upon human society. But critics also make a huge effort to evaluate these works, and then interpret the artist’s observations to public.
First of all, it is no doubt (that,主语从句引导词不省略) the creative minds and accomplished works by all kinds of artists that add color to the binary world of black and white and endless of shades of grey, and givessociety something of lasting value. Painters like Da Vinci, Picasso, Van Gogh, musicians such as Mozart, Beethoven; they all have created lots of masterpieces that resonate among people across(all over,能更形象化一些) the world, regardless of time, nationality, gender and(or) age. It is Da Vinci that endowed the “Mona Lisa” with ever lasting value, and even almost four hundred years later, people are still obsessed with her mysterious smile. Similarly, Mozart composed the never fading opera “Figaro marriage”, which is widely performed and appreciated today.
On the other hand, critics indeed play a(an) indelible role that helps us have a better understanding(better understand artistic works,最好指明understand的对象) and become a connoisseur, because the creativity of great artists always seems intangible to laymen. For instance, as Picasso’s most distinguished painting, Guernica always eludes common people, therefore, we need the critics that are familiar with Picasso’s painting style to interpret it .They illuminate us that the shape of bodies and gestures represents a feeling of protest, and the light bulb represents the sun, and the monster represents General Franco, the dictator of Spain at that time. As a consequence, we can realize that Picasso’ purpose in it, which was to bring to(attract) the world's attention to the bombing of the town Guernica and to express his opposition to war. However(Therefore,应该是顺承上文意思), without the effort of those critics, common people hardly have the perspective to find out the anti-war symbols and Picasso’s internal feeling hidden in the paintings.
Besides, sometimes critics’ views might shape our attitude towards a certain artist. The life experience of Vincent Van Gogh serves as the best example to illustrate this opinion. Creative and innovative as he was, Van Gogh was largely ignored by his contemporary critics. One reason for this might be that Van Gogh’s paintings contradicted the prevailing aesthetic criterions at that time and he(与前面的主语不一致) developed his own unique painting style, thus he failed to find any appreciative audiences during his lifetime. However, with the truly understanding of the essence of Van Gogh’s works, critics in 20th century regarded him as the pioneer of expressionism and highly esteemed himself and praised his works. Because of(Due to ,because和reason有点重复) this reason, Van Gogh became also widely admired by the common people.
In final analysis, artists and critics are largely complementary to each other. It is the artists that create the world of art, and the critics that make this world open to society and more appealing. As we can see, most eminent artistic works, which give the society lasing value, are those created by talented artists and evaluated by insightful critics!
条理很清楚,就是觉得能不能多点例子,总是Van Gogh的,除了举例,还能多点论述的语句就很好了。 |
