TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
Whether students should have a skeptical attitude to whatever they study and question whatever they are taught, the speaker claims that it is necessary.I concede that students should have a skeptical attitude towards whatever they study, however,I cannot agree with the speaker that students should question whatever they are taught.
Admittedly, holding a skeptical perspective is,especially for children,of vital imporantance. As is known to all, every thing has its merits and demerits,we need not only to know about the advantages of a specific thing to enjoy the benefits that it brings to us,but more importantly,we are in dire need to acknowledge the disadvantages of the identical thing to avoid the vicious outcomes that it might bring to us.When studying, students should also get full information about what they are studying. For example, the teacher says that the snake is bad since it is harmful to people. If students just accept that without any doubt, they can hardly fully understand the significant function that the snake plays. While the students who doubt if the snake is that bad,why donot we just make it disappear, then they can collect further information to know that the snake is indispensable to our ecosystem since it eat many kinds of pests.
However, every thing has its limit. If students question whatever just for question's sake,it is also serves no good.To begin with, unconditional and indiscriminate questioning will undermine the relationships between students and teachers. For example,if students question every single word that their teacher say, they can learn nothing and the probable consequence might be the teacher losing his or her courage to teach. What's more, some basic sciences, such as mathematics、physics and biology, have their specific rules and disciplings. It will make no sense that a student doubt why one plus one equals to two.Last but not least, questioning everything may detrimental to establish a healthy character, resulting in students do not trust other people and cannot cooperate with others effectively and efficiently.
To conclud,it is a good virtue to establish a dialectic thinking, which is of the most importance to a person's further development. However,we need to assist students to figure out
the extent to which they should doubt.Only by moderate skepticism, can our students truly benefit from questioning.
TOPIC: ARGUMENT167 - A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.
*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology
The arguer's claim is well-presented,yet it is not well-reasoned.There are several failures in reasoning which make the claim is not convincing.
First and foremost,30 volunteers is not an adequate sized sample that can representative the ordinary insomnia suffers.Perhaps these 30 volunteers are just sensitive to this folk remedy, while other suffers are actually insensitive to this remedy. The claim will more defensible if the study can include a larger sized sample which can representative of the general insomnia suffers.
Secondly, the study fails to figure out the quality of the sleep, namely, the study dose not quantify the quality of the sleep, making the conclusion not justifiable. For example, what is the meaning by saying "soundly"?How can a person define what is a sound sleep and what is a bad one? There is no criteria to analysis the quality of the sleep.
Thirdly, there may exist other factors to contribute to the sound sleep in the third week. For example, the volunteers have gotten used to the atmosphere and circumstances of the controlled room,so they sleep better than at the previous two weeks.Without considering and ruling out other factors which might contribute to the sound sleep, the study's conclusion is not justifiable.
Finally, the study of the folk remedy just lasts for a week, there may exist some detrimental consequances which will appear after some while, what's more, if the volunteers are continued to be treated with the folk remedy, what will be the outcome? No one knows. So the study cannot claim that lavender cures insomnia.
To conclude, there are many other explainations to the study, without making these factors clear, the study cannot substantiate the conclusion. |
