TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
Is the history valuable to study only when it is related to our daily lives as the speaker asserts? In a sense, I tend to agree that some study of history is good for our daily lives. However, the speaker begs question by overlooking the crucial role of history which is relevant to people's daily lives and unfairly give it a second priority. In my point of view, the study of history has value both to our daily lives and to the development of our society, and an all-sided consideration is needed when deciding the precedence.
Admittedly, studying the history related to our everyday lives is important because we can learn and solve problems by referring to the history. For example, the knowledge I have learned in college is summarized by people in the history. Without their efforts, I cannot notice about the useful knowledge. Besides, the tools we use today such as lamp, refrigerator, fan, television and so forth are all invented by greatest scientists in the past. Living with these inventions, our daily lives become more convenient, comfortable and colorful.
However, with the fast developing of technology, some history has lost value for our study because they have fallen behind the pace of our modern society. For instance, today more and more people use mobile phones to keep in touch with each other. The main change is that we use it to send messages instead of writing letters previously. What's more, we can also use it to listen to music, surf the Internet and take photos. As everyone knows, mobile phones are the product of modern society, that is, are not existed in the history. Therefore, learning history can not help us use modern tools and develop technologies.
Moreover, we can not assert that the study of history is valuable only to our daily lives for it is also valuable to our society. Through researching the history, we can avoid making mistakes again as people have made in the history.
One example is the pollution of the environment. People in the past have done many things that are harmful to the environment. The waste gas and polluted water emitted from factories polluted the air and other water areas. The trash abandoned by human beings are destroyed the soil and make it unavailable to plant on. Forestation leads many species of animals to be extinct and causes landslides and sandstorms. In a word, if we do not learn these faults people have had in the past, we may not realize the importance of environmental protection. It is a global problem but not problem in our daily lives so the study of history is also significant to our society.
In conclusion, on the one hand, we should acknowledge that we should study history accounting for whether it is relevant to our daily lives since it can lead us do things better and help us deal with problems. On the other hand, we should consider the importance of learning history in the level of society, too. We can make fewer mistakes and therefore do less harm to our society by drawing lessons from the history. A balance between studying the history from both the personal level and the social level is needed for better developing of individuals and the whole society.
