Issue 136 The absence ofchoice is a circumstance that is very, very rare.


Nowadays, there is a discussion about thechoice is rare or not. While some argue that we rarely have any choices and cando nothing to change the situation, I do agree with the speakers' assertionthat selections are almost everywhere around us, just like the air we breath.And at the same time I do not overlook that some objective things like deathwhich we could not design as our idea.

Admittedly,there are a lot of objective factors that we can not choose but only accept,though a number of which upset us. Since we, as a human being, are a member ofthe world and a form of existence of the nature, the whole natural rules anddisciplines would make a function on us inevitably. In this case, there is no optionat all. Bare would serve as a fit example. No one can chooseeither the time or the place he is born; his parent might be as rich as a millionaire,or as poor as a beggar. He, himself, might beluckily born as a genius, or poorly a disabled man. Anything might happen tohim without any choice for him. So dose some disasters that the nature bringsto us such as earthquake or haixiao. If we have a selection, we would definitelydelete them from the human's life for ever. But unfortunately, the possibilitythat we have this option is zero. Hence, this is the case with the absence of choicewhen we confront these natural things.


However, we, as a human being, also havefree mind and fortunately are an element of the diverse and colorful societythat we build by our wisdom and hard work for significant years. We can pickwhat we eat, what we wear, how we go to work for there are so many differentand numerous ways that you could optfor. And with the progress of the economic, the development of the science andtechnology, the less and less limitation of speech and discussion, we happilyenjoy the colorful and-more important- a myriad of alternatives they have givento us. When you are hungry, considering the question where to go to for adinner-the Chinese food or the Japansushi, or the Italian noodles might even take you ten minutes. Spend a holiday?The question comes again: go to play a game with your friends outside or surfingon the line and communicating with the "strangers" in home or goingto a library to stuffing your mind with a variety of books? And which book to pickis still a choice. In short, our daily life is full of distinct options.

Moreover,the circumstances that people often complain that they have "no choice"dose not equate that there are really "no choice". But in fact, froma number of alternatives they are compelled to make a decision which they are notsatisfied with because these options are not viable or attractive. This casewould happen when a man fall into a dilemma, and any of these alternatives he selectcould not satisfy him. However, truly there are other choices, merely being worseas he might believe. For instance, a man who is trapped into a financial crisisand declares bankruptcy claims that he has no choice. But, he could do another humblejob to sustain which he might suppose as an uncomfortable incident. Thus, avariety of options exists though many of them do not pleased people.

Tochoose means we make a decision from different and numerous alternatives. For ahuman being who has a regular mental situation, he has to encounter thesedifferent choices everyday and, then, do what he prefers to do. And we should confessthat one case that we can not change the objective materials around us which isunder the natural disciplines.
