“In any field of endeavor, it is impossible to make a significant contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field”

Can we make a significant success in any field without knowing the past achievement within the field? The answer is that we have to base our endeavor on the past achievement of the related field. By doing so, and only by doing so, can we make a significant contribution in the field, and the future progress and development of our society.

This may be illustrated by one common fact that there would already be some sound achievements made by others before us if we are not the first to endeavor to carry such research in the field. In natural science such as mathematics and physics, for example, some existed achievements-numerous principles and formulas-made by others and proved sound right through practices of hundreds of years, which we should rely on in the process of our research. It’s no use questioning their validities, and also it is wrong ignoring their exist. On the contrary, we should bear them in our mind all the time, and take fully advantage of them for our contribution. In this sense, no significant contribution could be made if you ignore or don’t pay enough attention to the past achievements in the related fields, because you would waste most of your time and energy in doing what have already been achieved by others before you.

So the most important thing we firstly should do is not to endeavor to carry out our research immediately, but to well know what achievements in the related fields have been made during the past. By doing so, not only can we have a comprehensive knowledge of the fields in a relative short time, but also can save us lots of time and endeavor which can be used to do other important work..

On the other hand, we should also have a sense of questioning at the same time. Of the necessity we should have because of the fact that not all of the past achievements are right, due to our limited knowing about them or conditions such as limited level of science and technology, or that what seemed right in the past would be wrong at present as the development of our knowledge. For example, Copernicus’ proposition that sun is the center of the universe was considered to be right under the past conditions, which, however, it seems to be ridiculous now. This is due to our ever-increasing development of science and technology, which is precisely the same with our present research. We should always bear in mind a sense of questioning in the process of our research.

Obviously, from the above analysis, we can have no difficult in realizing the importance of basing our endeavor on the past achievement and the necessity of bearing in mind the sense of questioning for the sake of making significant contribution. Moreover, knowing the past achievements might throw a light to our research, and sometimes, might also be a short-cut to our success.
