TOPIC: ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

In this report, the speaker claims that the  committee should give Professor Thomas (T) $10000 extra salary per year and give her promotion in order to keep her from leaving this Elm City University (ECU), to support this claim, the speaker pointed out that Professor T is the most popular  teacher among students according to the number of student to attend to her class, and the speaker demonstrate that she has brought money more than her income to the research grants. the author indicates that two facts to show her popularity and ability of research. However the argument are warranted in several respects.
First of all, the mere facts that Professor T's classes are among the largest at the unversity lends little support to the popularity of Professor T among students, perhaps the main reason for the number of students to attend Professor T's classes become so large is the classes held by Professor T are required coureses,. Without ruling out the posibility of the explanation of Professor T's largest classes of , the concusion about the populartiy of Professor T seems hasty.
Secondly, the speaker unfairly asserts that the donation of Professor T represtent her research ablilty. other respects to evaluate the competence of Professor T are overlooked in this report.  in addition, the money she has brought to the university in research which exceeded her salary in the past two years does not mean a large sun of money. other factors should be taken in to consideration to evaluate the ability of Professor T.
Thirdly, the report fails to provide other posibilities or thoughts that Professor T considered, maybe $10000 raise per year for Professor T is still insufficent, and the promotion to Department Chairperson cannot attract Professor T to stay. maybe she insist to leave because the facilities and enviroment are promised in other unversities. More consideraion should be taken into in order to know the truth reason of Professor T's leave.
In conclusion, to strengthen this assert, more information should be offered and more possibilities should be consideration. a survy are needed to taken among students of Professor T in order to know the actual popularity of her.and the competence of Professor T should be evaluated from other respects rather than from the donation to research merely. and the personal willing ofProfessor T are required to gain in order to know the true reasons of her to leave ECU.
