TOPIC: ISSUE 29 - "Public figures such as actors, politicians, and athletes should expect people to be interested in their private lives. When they seek a public role, they should expect that they will lose at least some of their privacy."

It is the human nature to be prone to pry in other people's lives, especially the private lives of the public figures. Should the public figures expect to be interested in the private lives and lost some privacy? I fundamentally agree the speaker that they must expect to be interested, but whether expect to lost some of their privacy depends on how much they gain from making the privacy public.
The actors should be ready to lose their privacy because making privacy public is a pivot way to benefit their jobs. At most cases, the more attention they attract, the more successfully they work. We can judge their career by the frequency they appear in the entertainment news or magazines. This dose not only satisfy public's curiosity, the actors also gain more benefits. It helps them to achieve more job opportunities, and help advertise their works freely. So they will sorrow when no one can remember them. At this time, they may even 'leak some privacy out carelessly' to attract people.
As far as the athletes, they gain their achievement mostly by their talent and diligence rather than interests on them, so there's no dispute that they do not want to lose their privacy. In our country, athletes attracting attentions gain no more than troubles. It's harmful weight than beneficial because they should spend most of time on practicing and more attractions may do harm to their practice and therefore undermine their achievement. For example, Tian Liang, who is one of the divers in the national team, was the headline of the magazines for his relationship with his girlfriend at one time. It leads to some absentness for the conferences in the team and he was admonished rigidly by his coach. One may argue that some athletes like David Beckham, who is a famous football star, is benefit from his reputation by accepting so some many advertisements. But at this time, he is more a stars than just athlete. Then he will be ready to be in the spotlight with his three young boys and answer some private questions when he promotes the products for Motorola in shanghai.
The politicians should be divided into two parts when considering this question. The ones who get their position by champions should be aware of lose some of their privacy, because during the courses, they can win more supports by public their privacy. Take Barack Obama for instance, some of his lectures involve his little daughter, by the form of talking to his daughter, he win more supports from the parents who concern with the next generation. In this case, his daughter surely is one of his privacy as his family member. But the nominated ministers would not expect to lose their privacy for they do not need to do so.
In conclusion, I hope that the discussion above express my standpoint explicitly that the public figures, no matter actors, politicians or athletes, who should expect lose privacy when they gain from public it. |
