TOPIC: ISSUE176 - "The function of science is to reassure; the purpose of art is to upset. Therein lies the value of each."

It seems true that art makes people upset for it is filled with imaginations and creativity, and science reassure the problems for it always seeking exact answers. But, taking a second thought about the sentences, we can easily find out it is not comprenhensive
comprehensive for it denies the existant
essistent to other meanings meaning
of science and art .

Looking back into the history, it is easy for us to find that there is one of the main functions of science, solving the unknown mysterious areas and explaining the unusual things and natural phenomena. And it continues as one important methold method through which human being can more clear understand the world and never be foolish for the baseless theories.  As we all know, in the Victoria age, many young princes, born in the royalty especially in England, got serious sick without any omen before and died in the end for unknown reasons, which the misfortune only happened to the princes. Therefore, people gradually started to believe there a evil curse must be existing between the poor princes which once caused a big scare among the royalty of England. However, with the development of the science and technology, nowadays, we know the poor affairs, called hhelophilia,Hemophilia(血友病） are caused by the marriage between close relationship, but are not evil curses from Satan
or something like this.

Otherwise, in the rapid development of our major society, properly applying the outstanding and meaningful fruits, discovered or invented by the study of science to improve our life much more comfortable, convenient and humanistic and contribute to our society, also have been the hot point which scientists focus on. People can enjoy the chats with their friends or families though who are thousands miles away with the help of the phone established by Solenoid principle(电磁学）.  

As for art, it is a medium for author to describe the substances and people around them, and to send their ample feelings from daily life and
abundant emotions in their deep inner hearts, such as love, hope, aspiration, sadness praise, hatred and so on, which can build a vivid and hopeful world in our hearts. People can catch the strong love of life, adore of being from the Van gogh's masterpieces such as Star through the strong colours presented before people's eyes, which stimulates human being's inner emotions to love the world they have got. The famous piano music, For Elise created by the outstanding pianist Beethoven, brings us a peaceful mind and the hopeful
of life. That's maybe one of the value of art.

However, unfortunately, for the limitation of people's experiences and knowledge, the difference of age background, the shock of culture, and various of people's tasty, when people feel arts, most of them easily come into confused situation that they get nothing from the famous art, though it has got highly praise from over the word. For example, western people may hardly catch the essence in Chinese drama, which has the highest position in china art history. And my grandmother never understand why I am favour in pop, which is so noisy music in her eyes. So, that's maybe why people feel art make them upset.

In sum, based on the above mentioned, we can know it is one-sided to consider the function of science is to reassure and the purpose of art is to upset, for depending on the difference ways of using them, we can get plenty of meaning of science and art.
