TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
WORDS: 615          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2010-5-13 18:18:31

Nowadays, everything is changing and developing at a considerable rate, voluminous information impose on people's mind. However, skepticism should be regarded as the most valuable ability for a person who in order to assess preeminence in fierce competition. According to my perspective, students who are capable of building up skepticism definitely benefit themselves as well as the entire society.

Initially, with an attitude of skepticism, students will become more active in learning, which assist them learning more and faster. Common sense tells us that only when a student is strongly motivated and inspired can he or she pays attention on examining the knowledge they are imbued. Therefore, firstly, it is a promising phenomena for teachers if their students question on what they are taught instead of accepting it directly, for which indicating students' curiosity, respects, and interests on their teaching content. Secondly, if students maintain a habit of asking why on the lessons, it is probably that they  are seeking for a logical clues in understanding which necessarily result in true insights and efficiency. For example, everybody with experience of preparing for a history examination are acquired that how difficult and boring to remember the meaningless historical facts---such as years, historical figures, and occurrence If a student just repeat in machine-like way rather than ask "why things would happen at the particular time in such a way" or "what on earth these materials should be recalled by modern people", there is no surprising that they would completely get caught into agony. However, if they keep questioning on the reasonability of history occurrences, they are likely to lead to clearance and understanding which contribute to better, easier, and happier memory process. In a word, asking questions helps students improving learning efficiency.

More importantly, a sense of skepticism, which beyond simply asking question about the content, exhibit a powerful impelling in current academic development. No one could deny the potent of skepticism in improving science and technology. History abounds with such examples. Watt, who made a perfect advance on steam machine brought human people into the steam era, was household for his skepticism. He was amazed at existent steam machine, but ephemeral he believed this machine was not well-developed by previous inventors. Then his skepticism on the machine helped him find advanced method to stimulate and utilize the power of steam. Not only in  fields of science and technology, skepticism demonstrate its value, but also in any other domains, skepticism plays a crucial role in breakthrough. For instance, philosophers in the Enlighten period, such as Bacon, Hume were skeptical about the gospel of Bible proposed by Medieval Church. These pioneering thinkers casted doubt on the alleged truth and pursue for the reality, and then they informed people the importance and excellence of human being, which laid foundation for later social revolutions. Consequently, skepticism is so significant for human beings.

However, overwhelmed skepticism on everything would not be favorable, for it not only resulting in unfounded base of knowledge but also causing panic, disappointment, and idleness. Imagine the situation that everything are suspicious—the languages we use, the basic calculation formulas, ordinary moral disciplines, and so forth, people would be disarmed of the tools depended on to continue exploring the nature, society, and human themselves, at the same time all the accumulated experience and knowledge cannot be trusted any more. In addition, it is universally acknowledged that if a person is skeptical on whatever he study, he could not gain anything, and also he barely carry on achieving more. What’s worse, with negative impacts spreading to his character, he inclines to doubt everybody to cultivate a cynic or attacking personality, which cannot be accepted by other individuals.

In conclusion……

TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
WORDS: 546          TIME: 00:58:17          DATE: 2010/5/14 18:12:03

Aristotle once said, "Thinking begins from doubts and surprises." Actually, skepticism is an attitude of doubt. One would call into question shows that he can think independently, analyze problems and make his own judgments, which are the basic qualities of being a scientist. Discovering the problems, putting forward questions are precisely the driving forces to develop science and society. Thus, undoubtly I agree with the assertion that students should keep certain skepticism and question what they are taught rather than accepting it passively.

"Every theory and every idea have a theory as a premise, but this theory is not necessarily perfect. What we need to do is to take some time finding out and solving these problems." Said Joseph Eugene Stiglitz, the winner of the Nobel Prize for economics. Professor Stiglitz proposed that students should uphold a spirit to question, "Do not entirely believe your teachers' words which are said to you." Just looking back to the history, such examples have been emerging all the time. Due to the bold question to the "heliocentric", Copernicus created the "geocentric" and achieve a fundamental change in astronomy. In the disbelief of "Phlogiston", Lavoisier created the oxidation and verified the law of conservation of mass. Galileo overthrew the theory that "The falling weight is proportional to the speed" with the well-known experiment made at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Thus, he corrected the wrong conclusion which had lasted as long as 1900 years. In these cases, we can clearly see that in every progress of science and civilization, skepticism is the most indispensable factor which contributes to the achievements as milestones.

Educators are heroes in modern times. Their foresight, deep analysis and sharp thinking lead the education to develop step by step toward the real educational concept. A new concept in education is always based on the original inheritance with subversion, but also for the improvement and creation of realities. Thus, skepticism is the effective leader. Skepticism is not just to deny simply, nor to deliberately pursue to be different. Skepticism is a kind of multi-angle update and upgrade which is based on the reality, the multi-level interpretation. For the students, lacking of self reflection, learning process would achieve the lowest efficiency. Without skepticism, education would be not innovative. Without innovation, education would lose the vitality, which brings about the meaningless knowledge transmission.

The key that opens all gates of science is no doubt a question mark. Most of our great discoveries should be attributed to the ability of asking "why". Balzac told us the spirit of skepticism and critics is the most valuable virtue. Once a student begins to ask why, he will be able to go more deeply to explore the mysteries of nature and science, society and culture. This will be more meaningful than passive acceptation.

In sum, I totally agree that students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study and question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. Numerous scientific giants proved to us that there is doubt, there is an advance. I would like to quote some words of honorary president of Stanford University as an end. Encouraging students to have the courage to question, to challenge the world is always the most important responsibility to the Universities, whenever it is.

153"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

Study is a process to question and to accept. There are no absolute truths but just relative truths exist in the word. Thus, even if a conclusion is well accepted, it is still worth questing. Being a student, one’s main target is to study. However before study, one should know how to study, and the answer is obvious, study with skepticism.
Studying with skepticism can let students get knowledge deeply and profoundly. Because if students study with skepticism, they will not just accept or remember what they have learned, instead, they will question why and how the knowledge or assertions, they are learning, generated. Then they will find out the answer by themselves or asking others. During the course, they will know how the knowledge deduced and why others results they thought before are wrong. For example, I am an engineering student, when my teachers assign us home works; they always let us to find out some questions about what they taught and to write an article to illustrate whether these questions are right or not. In order to full file these home works, we should firstly be familiar with what my teacher taught us, secondly find out the question we are going to illustrate and thirdly refer books to know how to illustrate the question. The practice is a good way to train us bringing skepticism to whatever we study, and during the three steps mentioned above, we can not only be familiar with what we have learned but also, as for we refer books to help us illustrating the question, know more knowledge relate to our lesson. Meanwhile, by writing the article to illustrate the questions we found, we will have a chance to find out the part which is hard for us to comprehend, and get a deep understand about it by illustrating it. Obviously, in this way to obtain knowledge is much better than the way to accept it passively.
Studying with skepticism can also help students to innovate. As we all know, innovations are always come from the question of predecessors’ opinions. Imagine, if Copernicus didn’t quest the geocentric theory, how can he put forward the heliocentric? If Devin did not quest the creationism, how can he write the “origin of species“? if Lavoisier didn’t doubt the phlogiston theory, how can he develop the phlogiston theory? there are many examples in the history or around our life. study with skepticism make us keep a critical eyes on every knowledge we are taught, if we found the predecessors are wrong, we will have chance to create our own theory.
Moreover, because studying with skepticism make us not easy to believe what we are taught and let us think whether the knowledge is reasonable first, so to some extent, this can make us more objective. for example when the teacher make a flaw during class, if we just to accept what the teacher say, we might cannot find the teacher is wrong and remember the flaw as right, however, if we quest what the teacher  teach before we accept it, we will avoid make mistake.
In conclusion, bring a certain skepticism to whatever we study, we will understand what we learn more deeply, make our study more effectively, help us to innovate and make us more objective.

To soonyu

As we all know, not everything we have learned is true. If we bring certain skepticism to knowledge, what we have learned can be more clear and logical. Without questioning, creation will never be made[搭配不当]. However, in some aspects, passively study[ing] can help us learning quickly.[前肯后否]
We have to acknowledge that skepticism leads to development of science. During the past[In the past/During the past period], when people believed that the earth is the center of [the] universe, students are misled by absurd theories. Without questioning whether these theories are true[were true or not], human beings could not create modern scientific system. If Galileo were not suspicious, we even would not know what gravity is.[这例子描述得很随便哪~] Skepticism during[In] learning can help us understanding the crux and background of knowledge so that we can make[render/push/improve/promote用词太一般了] science developing. In certain aspect, Suspicion[suspicion] promotes the progress of human.[论证得不够,最好深入谈谈为什么skepticism能够促进进步,和怎样促进进步。比如,怀疑代表对现有理论的不满足。促使人更好地揭示真理,认识自然和社会。如果没有怀疑精神,人们的知识和思想只能原地踏步。]
However, in many aspects, skepticism may cause trouble to our study and research. During thousands of years[during用法不当,since thousands of years ago,几千年以来], science has had[这个也不好] much development[Since thousands of years ago, science has embraced continuous advancement]. In many subject, there are a large [scale] of theories that have already been applied [to do] for hundred or even thousand years. For instance, the theory that the area of the square built upon the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares upon the remaining sides has been substantiated long years ago[这是什么东西?]. If paying much attention to suspecting whether these theories are true[注意whether的用法,or not], we are wasting [of] time. In addition, learning without skepticism can accelerate the speed of our study especially in nowadays when there is too much knowledge to learn.[按我的理解,这段是想用很多理论已经用了很多年来反驳不应该怀疑。
Moreover, science is created[搭配不好] by human beings so that it may not be perfect[这个观点是万金油,人总是有局限性的。As science is a kind of knowledge which results from human’s observing and thinking, it is certainly that various inconsistency, inaccuracy and flaw exist in science. ]. Even[这里并没有递进] a theory is not always true, if working well[什么结构?], it can be accepted. For instance, we have attested that the classical mechanics, which created[泛滥了~] by Newton, is not always true, especially when object studied by us is too large or too small.[建议搜集例子的相关表达,太不贴切了] However, in many aspects[变化一下,in many cases/areas/spheres/fields/premises; under many conditions/presumptions/ ], it really works. The defects of the society do not make many troubles[un] to its application when we apply it. On the contrary, if we suspect the theory and insist on applying more accurate methods, we would have to face on complex calculations that may not be more efficient than the original methods.[…可以理解为为了贪图安逸逃避繁重计算量,我们不该怀疑,不充分] Under this circumstance, we have better to learn without skepticism.
To sum up, bringing certain skepticism to study is benefit to developing science and may result in development of human beings. However, in many aspects, students should not question what they are taught. In order to learn more clear and quick, they should not suspect whatever they learned.
[文章问题很多啊,句法混乱,建议重点看复句。Vocabulary is fairly limited;lacking convincing and sufficient reasoning.个人建议,写详细提纲,把问题理解清楚之后再写,写时多查词典、翻范文、用google找贴切表达。写好一篇文章胜过写十篇自己都不愿看第二眼的文章~ 加油!! ]

153"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

Education nowadays is much concerned to a point where a wide range of discussion has been aroused. Among those focuses that are usually brought forward, the attitude students should have when having classes attracts much attention. Should they have classes with a skepticism mind? Some believe that passively accepting what they are taught is a brilliant way to acquire knowledge. Nevertheless, after weighing up both the prospective benefits and potential risks, I reckon that it is the skeptical attitude that we should have in class.

Skepticism is necessary because we cannot guarantee our teaching to be the truth. What we taught today in classes is the things that up to now are proved by facts we found. Although much reliable, we cannot say it for sure whether they are all truth forever and will never be testified wrong. Theory changes every day with the development of technology and science. More tellingly, most elites of academy believed if there was no force on a moving thing, it would stop soon. That was based on their daily observation, when pushing a box, for instance, and was proved, as far as they were concerned, all the time. As we all know today, they made a mistake by ignoring friction. However, if there were nobody who are skeptical at that time, we would not achieve anything we made by physics. Luckily, Galileo helped us get rid of that misconception with skepticism after some consideration and experiment. In not a dissimilar way, students should use a skeptical view to learn, or there will be a catastrophe that nonsense would appear everywhere and development would be in sleep mode.

What is more, being skeptical is the best way to keep and improve our own creativity. Creativity is most encouraged in the process of questioning. When we tend to be skeptical, we have to consider comprehensively and come up with something innovative to achieve our goal. When accepting knowledge passively, our thought is limited in the shackle formed by textbooks' sermon. We dully know some knowledge and nothing more. It is awful. Skepticism is effective in serving as a key to maintaining our curiosity and creativity. Those are most important things in researching. It is Einstein's questions about high-speed move that lead to Relativity. It is Newton's impugnation on the essence of force that help to form the fundamental construction of physics. Many other samples can be named. To sum up, Skepticism contributes to creativity.

Skepticism is indispensable, whereas some people believe that with all skeptical things there will be terrible chaos without limiting the scale of skepticism, so they do not question at all. Under some certain circumstances, questioning everything can head for a great lack of belief of whatever says by teachers. We have to say that skepticism should not be useless without control, but that is not the reason we should not be skeptical. We can solve the problem in a simple way. Do not merely be skeptical about others, but be skeptical about ourselves as well. After thinking twice, we can see the problem deeper, and that is the way to get away from superficial quarrel. Then, we can have a reasonable discussion other than a useless fight. That seems easy but effective.

All in all, skepticism can largely enhance the process of learning, which is beneficial to students. Although, too much questions may sometimes mess teaching up, we should encourage skepticism. And a good order of classes can be reserved with a thing in students' minds. That is, instead of to ask superficial things, to be skeptical only after learning thoroughly what they textbook says and deep consideration. In that way, education can acquire the best consequence, for students can learn not only knowledge in textbooks, but also a significant attitude of exploration.

Thus, he corrected the wrong conclusion which had lasted as long as 1900 years.(例子很强大,不过过于经典,慎用) In these cases, we can clearly see that in every progress of science and civilization, skepticism is the most indispensable factor which contributes to the achievements as milestones.

Without innovation, education would lose the vitality, which brings about the meaningless knowledge transmission.(这段像散文~)

(这段可以和上段合起来啊)

In sum, I totally agree that students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study and question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. Numerous scientific giants proved to us that there is doubt, there is an advance. I would like to quote some words of honorary president of Stanford University as an end. Encouraging students to have the courage to question, to challenge the world is always the most important responsibility to the Universities, whenever it is.(名言帝!)
