Dear Professor Watson,

My name is Yiping Guo. I am very interested in digital signal and image processing with a focus on the coding methods to JPEG and MPEG compressed images and video.

I have been given admission of Texas A&M University for Fall 2003 recently. I learned that your current research interest is in signal processing and image processing systems, very close to mine. I have read part of your conferences. Though I can only understand part of your articles, they give me a first view to your research. I feel that I wish to do research on image processing with emphasis on the coding methods to JPEG and MPEG compressed images and video.

I am working for a mobile device testing company now. The mobile phone I test can transmit pictures in several formats (including JPG and GIF) and play MPEG-4 format videos now.

I review my lessons of advanced algebra in the evenings because I use matrix operation very often when learning your DSP I. I am also writing a paper on synchronizing digital signals using VHDL designed circuits. One of my high school classmates in US will help me to submit it to a journal.
