Most people think that their deeply held values are the results of rational choice, but reasons often have little to do with the way people form values.

Does reason has much to do with our deeply held values and the way people form them? While it might be true in some particular situations and cases, however, our everyday experiences might lead much credence to the contrary of the assertion, that is, reasons often have little to do with the way people form values.

To begin with, it is well known that different people form different values according to various considerations, not merely reasons but also his/her custom and personal interest or emotions. For example, in some regions in Africa, the custom that young people of some particular age wear nothing at the ceremony of their folk’s marriage appears to be ridiculous to some one living in Middle East country and other regions. But you have to admit that it’s their custom, and also the value of them, then the only thing we should do is to respect them. In this case, custom rather than reason forms values, though it might be quiet incredible for others, but why? No reason can be thrown on this. As for personal interests, different people might have different values depending upon their interests. Take a quarrel for an example, different people may have different attitudes towards it, which is often due to different personal interests and emotion. If you have a sense of sympathy, you may criticize the one who badly beat the other, irrespective of whether he is reasonably wrong. At this moment, it is not reason but emotion that forms our values. This is the point I wish to emphasize.

Secondly, values might change even with the same person as time goes by, which is due to various conditions. This can explain by the fact that we are emotional creatures, and selfish and aggressive by our nature, and also our though are not unchangeable for ever. We may denounce the vast deforestation of some poor countries, while ignoring that we might consume the most proportion, and   without considering the fact that deforestation might be the only thing they can do to prevent the country from being even poor. But how about the richer countries? And have they done some practical and useful contributions to that? Perhaps their values on such things are formed not by reason but by human nature-selfishness. All of above analysis could illustrate that reasons might have little to do with our values, or, to be more accurate, other things such as human nature may have relations with our values.

However, reason still acts as an important factor to help us form our values and is essentially needed sometimes. Reason could correct our thoughts when we have no idea of what to do, and help shape our values whenever we have to make a decision between choices. Because sometimes these choices may contradict with our emotion and habit, and thus make it hard to decide, then reason plus experience should be good references.

With the help of above analysis, now you would have no difficulty in realizing that our deeply held values are the result of many factors, not only rational choices. In fact, reason might have little to do with the way people form values. But you should not take it for granted that rational thought is useless. Whenever you are in dilemma, take reason for reference, and you might have a new discovery.

Secondly, values might change even with the same person as time goes by, which is due to various conditions.(这一句是你的中心句吧?但是你好像没有怎么深入展开论证啊。你下面所说的都与上一段相差无几。) This can explain by the fact that we are emotional creatures, and selfish and aggressive by our nature, and also our though are not unchangeable for ever. We may denounce the vast deforestation of some poor countries, while ignoring that we might consume the most proportion, and without considering the fact that deforestation might be the only thing they can do to prevent the country from being even poor. With the help of above analysis, now you(最好不要如此用的二人称表达,毕竟这是驳论文。) would have no difficulty in realizing that our deeply held values are the result of many factors, not only rational choices. In fact, reason might have little to do with the way people form values. But you should not take it for granted that rational thought is useless. Whenever you are in dilemma, take reason for reference, and you might have a new discovery.
