上海的签证形式特别好,签出的F-1特别多,据观察,只有部分少量被CHECK或REJECT。
尤其是小GLASSBOY,放人的速度惊人,一批批F-1扬起V形手!只是好像探亲和商务不大
如意,不少被据!领事馆人太多,一上午就有两百多号人,叫号的次序很乱!所以早去
晚去影响不大。尤其应该注意的是申请表格中不能留有任何空白!!只要有空格,就要
划杠!我就是如此失误,留有空格,所以号码从五十到一百多。
我比较幸运,碰上了大GLASSBOY。问的问题虽然简单,但是由于他卷舌音太重,还是听
不大懂,还出了些笑话。一开始问我的专业是否为~, 再问~是什么东西。向我要一个
resume, 读音很特别,法语发音的那个音标。我没听懂,他就教我读。接着说我论文多
,要我英文摘要,我给了他,再问我对什么~处理,我说~,很明显不敏感。问我为何
去美国,告诉他美国有最好的大学和~PROGRAM, 他说“REALLY?”我自信的说“Yes!”
最后问我是否单身,还出来个奇怪的字,PARDON了几次,他解释为你想娶的人,我才知
道问我有没未婚妻,可能是fiancee,又一个法语,我告诉他我和女友本来要结婚但由于
SARS取消了,她会留在中国。总共不过两三分钟。糊糊涂途就过了,WINDOW 11!
谢谢出国路上战友们的陪伴!两年多的征程呀,多少辛苦但也带来些欢愉!祝出国路上
的“同志们”都心想事成!为了感谢大家,把我整理的签证问题贴出,希望对大家有所
帮助!切记,每人经历不同,应该有自己的特色和突出之处!

自信加微笑, 金属物件不可带, 说话目光正视签证官,保持良好站姿, 回答问题简明扼
要,态度不卑不亢。
选出重点去出示:必须要交的材料有: 护照,收据,I20,OFFER letter(2份),Admiss
ion letter, G/T成绩单,DS156,157,158. 你的号码。其他重要的有resume,专业论文,
论文样本及其英文摘要(明示专业并不敏感), 成绩单,文凭证书,工作证明,将来导师的
HOMEPAGE,大量存款证明; E-mail打印件。可选的有身份证, PS, 家人照片,学校宣传单
,教授推荐信;介绍项目的资料.当然还有笔和涂改液。
提醒大家回答时不用长篇的把答案说完整,给人的感觉是在背,而vo需要的是交流的感
觉。
(1) What will you study in the United States? What is your purpose to USA? W
hat will you do in USA?

What is your purpose for the visa?  I need F-one visa to study for Ph.D. at

(2) Why do you go to ~ ? Why do you choose this University?
Its academic focus matches mine perfectly. So if I get my Ph.D. there, I wil
l have great space to develop in China.
How do you know this University?
Everyone in my field knows this famous University.
(2-1) Why study in US? Why do you want to pursue a doctor's degree in the US
A?
US has best ~ programs in the world.
(2-0) Why won't you stay in the States? Give me reasons that you will come b
ack to China?
Why don't you work for several years and get the green card before you come
back to china?
I know that US job market is bad for Ph.D in ~s, but it’s a good major in C
hina because of the prosper ~ Industry in China, So if I get my Ph.D. there,
I will have great space to develop in China.
(2-2) Why not a Ph.D. degree in China? Why not other countries, such as...?
I need best engineering university for my Ph.D. My area in China is new and
developing. But in the United States, it has been developed.
(3) Why not go to US last year? Why not study at the US since your graduatio
n?
I need to work several years to gather more practical experiences and improv
e my researcher ability.
(4) What is your current major? In what aspect of your major will you study
(related)? What’s the aspect? Do you have any interested area to study (spe
cialized area)?
My major in former ~ was ~ and ~ Engineering. My major in ~ is ~ science and
engineering. Research aspect (specialized in) is ~, especially~.

Bachelor degree at former ~ in 1996 and Master degree at the same school in

(6) What are you doing now? Do you have a description for your research?

How much is your monthly salary?
My total monthly salary is about 3500 RMB (in addition my part-time job,).
Why did you choose your job? Why did you choose the university at first?
~ is famous for its ~ scientific research in China. I like to do my research
work in the good ~ school.
I attend university at sixteen. At that time my father had a big influence o
n me, he is a engineer in a ~ factory. He believed the major will be good in
future China so hope me to choose this.
Why do you like your major?
接上,besides, I got good research experience in six years in lab in ~. So,
now, I think the major is my best choice.
(6.2) What is job of your parents?  What do your parents do? How much is you
r parents' salary?

I took fifteen courses, and did some research on ~.

developing; I think “~ “ is difficult because there are many technical te
rms although the terms are useful.
(8) How long will you study in USA?  Why it needs only four years?
About four years. I hope I could get PHD in four years. Perhaps because the
School is strict with its students.
(9) Have you got any scholarship?
TA position(18,000 dollars per year). My department told me, it is full fina
ncial support (including a tuition waiver).
What's your duty as a TA/RA? What kind of works you will do for this assista
ntship?
I will work a minimum of 15 hours per week on a funded project.
How much do you expect you will have to spend each year in the United States
?
From I-twenty, my cost for a year in U.S will be ~ dollars.
It seems the school give you much money?   Yes, Because the living expense i
n ~ is very high.
Why do you receive financial aid from this University? Why this university g
ave you the aid (funding)?
I am a good student and have great potential for doctoral research. And my b
ackground matches its academic focus very well.
Are you a top student in your school? What about your rank in your class?
Yes. I ranked top ten percent in my undergraduate study. In my graduate stud
y and research work, I published ~ academic papers in my area.
When are you going to enter US?
In the beginning of August, it is the date the school requires its TA or RA
should arrive.
Have you got your advisor? Have you any information about the US supervisor!

I don't have advisor now. It will be decided in the second semester. But I h
ave connected with a professor (~), he played a leading role in my field, He
re is his homepage and emails he sent to me. (His research focuses on ~. I t
hink my background fit his research project well.)
Do you know your future research work?
It is not decided now. But I have a interested professor whose. 接上

hip is for one year, then how about the following years?
If I remain good academic record, the school will renew full financial suppo
rt. I am a best student, and I am sure I will not have any problem in receiv
ing such financial support.
And however, even if I couldn’t get aid in my study, my family saving will
be enough to cover my expense. I have copies of bank deposit (bank certifica
te, bank statements), do you like to see them?
(10) How many universities have you applied? Which? Any other school admits
you? So how many universities accept you?
six universities which have ~ programs. (~University) Among the six universi
ties, two granted me offers. ~offered me a fellowship. Three other gave me a
dmission. ~ declined my application. Finally I chose ~ because it has good r
eputation in my area and its academic focus matches mine perfectly.
Have you applied the universities indicated in your GRE report? What is the
result?
No.  You know I took my GRE test 2 years ago, and at that time I just wante
d to get a good score in the test and didn't pay attention to the selection
of universities. 【I just select some universities in random】
(11) What will you do with your work for this Ph.D.?
I'll take courses for the first one or two years, and do research in area of
~ for four years.
(15) What is your plan (dream)? What do you plan to do when you go back (aft
er graduation)?
What will you do with your Ph.D(your plan).  Do you mean what will I study o
r my plan for the future?
At first I want to be a researcher in Tsinghua University or Chinese Academy
of Sciences.
My long-term goal is to be a “Changjiang Scholar”. “The Plan” is sponsor
ed by the Ministry of Education and “Changjiang Scholar” means potential l
eader in specific area in China. Here are some webpage about the plan.
If I become “Changjiang Scholar”, I will get at least 10 thousand RMB per
month in addition to my normal salary. So then I will not only achieve my ca
reer goal but also make a big money.
I know it is very difficult to compete for “Changjiang Scholar”, but if I
get my Ph.D in U.S and work hard in my research area, I believe the chances
for my dream coming true is big.
How much do you want to have? What will your salary be then?
About 6000 RMB per month, salary and bonus for the first years after I come
back. (we also can get bonus from the research funds for our personal life.)
I believe at that time I could live a good life in china.
Will you come back to this ~ university?  It’s not definite. I hope to go t
o a better one, a leading Univ.
(17) If you can not find such a position, what will you do?
If so, I will turn to my second choice. I will find a research position in a
leading ~ corporation in China, for example, ~Company. It has ~ and ~ resea
rch centers in Shanghai or Beijing.
What will your salary be then? About 10 thousand RMB per month. The salary o
f best researcher is rising now.
(18) Can you explain why many Chinese students didn't come back?
I think everyone has its own reason. But as I know, my previous advisor ~, c
ome back China after two years’ research work in ~, although American profe
ssor persuade him to stay there, and now he is Vice Dean of our department a
nd makes a big money. As to me, I'll also come back. Because (接上)

Why you took your GRE test two years ago? Why you took it so early? (Why not

My advisor told me that studying abroad would make me have a great space to
develop in China. He himself is a good model of this kind. I was encouraged
and gradually made up my mind to study abroad.
Can you promise that you will not be attracted?  Yes, and that's sure. China
is my motherland.
(30) When and where did you take the GRE (TOEFL) test? How much is your TOEF
L score? (score sheets) .
GRE test on ~ in Shanghai. Score is ~. TOEFL test on ~. And score is ~.
Why TOEFL score low?  At that time, I was busy in doing research and writing
some papers in my area, I haven’t enough time for preparing the test.
GRE score high?  Thanks! Everyone believes GRE test very difficult, so I spe
nt half a year preparing for it! No pains, No gains. I think it reasonable t
hat I got a good score in the test. I didn’t cheat.
How long have you prepared your visa interview? (Have you prepared the inter
view in New Oriental?)
Because I was very busy every day, I have little time to prepare for it. I d
on’t know much about New Oriental and I needn’t this kind of training.
(32) Where do you live?  Where will you live?
I am living in~. A rented house. I'll live in the dormitory of ~. I will app
ly for the dormitory after my successful VISA application.
Do you have a girlfriend (fiancée)? Where is she? Are you sure your gf will
keep relation with you during your graduate study?
Yes, she graduated from ~ in Shanghai and worked in a ~ as an ~.  We love ea
ch other, so she will stay in China and I will come back and reunite with he
r after graduation. We plan to get married one month later!
(48) If I can't give you your visa, what will you do? What will you do if yo
u could not get the visa for America?
I don’t want to lose this good opportunity. ~ is a famous university and I
really want to learn something and make myself more competitive, so I will a
pply it again. If I failed again, I will change my plan and try to find a Ph
. D. Position in China academy of Sciences.
(52) Why did you live in Shanghai? When you come back, will you work in shan
ghai, or in your hometown?
Shanghai is the financial and economic center of China. It’s a beautiful fa
mous and modern city in the world.
(35) What kind of good things do you know about America?
America has most active research environment. It’s young and welcomes new t
hings.
What is your best/worst quality?  Honest/ diligent; lack humor sometimes.
What is your favorite American movie?  Titanic. I have never seen such a mov
ie that can make people so moved and watch several times.
What do you do in your spare time? What's your funny? Why?  Jogging. I love
jogging very much. I believe it will keep me in good shape.  Listening to th
e music.
Which is your favorite restaurant? What food do you like to eat?  Chinese Fo
od.
What is your favorite color?  Green, it means “nature”!
What is your favorite pet (animal)? Why?  I have no pet now. But if I have t
ime, I would like to have a dog. Dog is honest.

Chinese Culture; Environment Pollution. Each nation has its best and worst.
I love my country.
Best president of the US?  Bill Clinton, improve the relation between China
and U.S
