Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been prove by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injures by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment.

Time: 3 hours     words:500

The result, proved by a study of two groups of patients, that antibiotics can be used to restrict secondary infections in order for patients' healing quickly after severe muscle strain seems at first glance to be logical. The medicine provided by doctors is always helpful for the ill recovering of patient. However, the author's conclusion that all patients diagnosed with muscle strain would well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment may overlook many other potentially significant elements and may lead to the patient's overestimate of the effect of the antibiotics but the harmful side.

Firstly, the study conducted is not persuasive enough to convince me of the healing effect of antibiotics. If patients completely consisted of strong youngsters are collected in one group and the other is fully involves old patients, the results might not be trustful at this circumstance. Youngsters, compared with old people, are more likely to recover after getting sick for their better immunity. Besides, the other factors, such as genders, health conditions, and whether getting this kind of sickness in the past, which influence the experimental results should be carefully considered. As mentioned in the argument, two different doctors focusing on two different aspects in medical had directed the two groups of patients, respectively. It is possible that their experience not the antibiotics help the patients to recover quickly. The study would be more reliable if the two doctors exchanged their patients of the same two group above to do the experiment again.

Secondly, there is an assumption in the presented argument that since antibiotics improve the patients' healing by restricting the effect of secondary infections, secondary infection is the only factor of keeping patients form healing quickly. This is obviously not the case. If there exists another substance which reduces the speed of recovering of severe muscle strain, then the antibiotics decrease the effect of such substance, regardless of their effect to the secondary infection. Hence, the recuperation time may be also significantly reduced.

Finally, the conclusion that "all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be... " lacks insufficient evidence. As most people known, every kind of medicine has both good-effect and side-effect. How can these antibiotics be excluded? It may be likely that these antibiotics will cause the sickness( the severe muscle strain) of the patients who are hypersensitive to these antibiotics more severe and even endanger their lives, while the other patients have nothing but recover quickly. In addition, these antibiotics administered together with other medicines may have a certain reaction that is quite harmful to patients. So, before having these antibiotics, patient should consider carefully whether these medicines are suitable to them.

This kind of antibiotics may somehow have the function of healing patients quickly as presented in the argument. However, before the introducing this kind of medicines to all the patients having severe muscle strain, doctors should consider all the significant elements mentioned above. All in all, medicines taken by a mistake sometimes amount to poisons.
