208. "The way people look, dress, and act reveal their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
I fundamentally agree with the speaker's assertion that in most cases we can tell people's attitudes and interests through the way they look, act and dress. And also by noticing the appearance and behavior of its people, we could easily know a society's ideas and values. In some special cases, however, the contention may be false. My points of this view are listed as follows.
The first one that I want to point out is that through talking with a person, observing his or her wearing and the manner of behavior, we can know the basic information about his or her characters and interests. For the reason that the way he or she speaks or behaves and the preference of clothing style all depend on his or her inner minds which directly influence one's attitudes toward the outer world and interests in new things. It is well known that a depressed person would prefer the cold color, such as blue, rather than warm color like red. In the highly demanding world, most teenagers are so open-minded that they are crazy in fashion and ready to accept new creatures. On the contrary, it is very likely that most elderly is cautious so as to be careful about everything they would do and it is hard for them to accept the new. In short, the way of looking, dressing and acting is the mirror of people's inner world--attitudes and interests.
Similarly, a society's ideas and values could be noticed by observing its people's appearance and behavior. Values are rules rooted in the minds of and maintained by its majority of society members. Any who do not obey them would be despised, isolated and dropped by other members. As discussed above, minds determine everything. These values and ideas are definitely reflected in the every aspects of its people's life, such as behavior and appearance. The United States, for instance, is a nation characterized by admiring freedom, pursuing character and funding of adventure and people in there are crazy in basketball and baseball which are sports full of passion. Consequently, through the window of people's appearance and behavior, a society's main ideas and values are lively presented in front of us.
Admittedly, there is no definite truth. In some special situations, if we use the same items to judge or determine some people, the results we get would be totally wrong. It is entirely possible in certain cases, one is compelled to act in some ways and his true character is compressed. If so, what we see is just superficial.
To sum up, in most cases, a person's interests and attitudes can be reflected in his or her dressing, act and so on. Also, we can tell a society's ideas and values by observing its people's behavior and appearance. Beside, in some particular situations, we should analyze such details deeply, for the situation is complicated.
