169.The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.
"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

The argument above presents a relatively sound case for arguing that if Pierce University want to attract the most gifted teachers and researches to their faculty and improve the morale of their entire staff, they should consider offering employment to the spouse of each new faculty member they hire. However, careful scrutiny of this argument would reveal that it suffers from several fallacies and therefore is unconvincing.

First of all, the causal relationship between the gifted teacher and researchers accepts an offer from a university and offer employment to their spouse is unwarranted. No evidence is offered to support this assumption. To establish this relationship, other factors that could bring about this result must be considered and ruled out. For example, the university’s rank in the world, how many students graduated from the university achieved The Nobel Prize. Without eliminating these and other possible factors, the author cannot confidently conclude that if offer an employment to teacher’s spouse, the teacher will become a new faculty member of this university.

In addition, the arguer fails to take into account the inherent differences between Bronston College and Pierce University. Perhaps the same course of action would be ineffective on Pierce University due to a myriad of differences, such as environmental, geological differences and attitudes of residents, whole economic conditions and so on. As a result, Bronston College and Pierce University establish an oversimplified analogy. Without accounting for these and other possible dissimilarities, the auger cannot assume that what resulted that both male and female professor are happier living when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area in the small town where Bronston College located
would bring about the same result in
Pierce University.

Moreover, the arguer unfairly relies on the assumption that professors accepted offer by Pierce University was responsible for improving the morale of their entire staff.
However, it is entirely possible that one or more other factors were instead responsible for it. For example, perhaps that freshman has a high level will improve their morale. Or perhaps the wages was increased by president. Either scenario would provide an alternative explanation for improving the morale.

To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer maintains. Therefore, if the author had considered the given factors discussed above, the argument would have been more through and logically acceptable.
