At point of Reys national seashore in Marine county California plant called Tinestrom's lupin is holding on for dear life. It's survivlal
has been threatened by the appearance of another plant, an invasive species called European beachgrass. So dose the bitchgrass outcompete the lupin for land and light? Not at all, according to a research of Washenton universtiy in St. Louis. Tiny dear mites have a taste for the seeds of lupins, This creatures cretters ordinary think twice before approaching the plants, because exposed out on the sand they are easiest pickings for birds  interested in rodent repast. But the beachgrass provides excellent cover, the mites use the grass to go close enough to pilfer seeds, before any hungry birds pilfer the mites. The research appears in the August issue of the Journal eocology. Informatin may be useful for proposed due restoration project. The unexpected consequences of the invading speicies, bring to mind the well-known comment by ecologist of Alod Leopot, to keep every cog and wheel is the first procaution of intelligent tinkering.

8-19

When you think of someone who is trusting, you may assume that they're gullible. That's not neccesarrily true. A fact that your pollyanna pal might be in a good position to point out. Because people who are faith in their fellow human beings are actually good at spotting lies. The finding is described in the journal social psychological and personaltiy science.

Researchers video taped a cadre of second-year MBA students as they pretended to interview for a job.   Half the interviewees were entirely truthful and half told at least three whoppers lies they thought would make themselves more attractive candidates for the fake job.

The scientists then showed the videos to a second set of subjests and asked them to rate the honesty of the interviewees and say which ones they would hire. The results, subjects who said that they think most people are basic honest, good natured and kind, were better at spotting the lairs than the self-described cynics. Subjects who were more suspicious were, ironically more likely to hire the liars. And less likely to detect their fabrications.

So trust may lend itself to better interpersonal intuition. And if you don't  believe that well, maybe you're just not  being honest with yourself.

Pollyanna  盲目自大的人
pal  同伴
cadre 干部 骨骼
whopper 弥天大谎
lend itself to... 适用于, 有助于
cynics  愤世嫉俗者

You don't have to be a champagne buff to want bettle flavor from your bubbly.
So the secret to a perfect glass? It is only in the pour. According to a study in Journel of
Agriculture and food chemistry, a kep play in champagne's  taste, is
disolved carbon dioxide. As it carbon dioxide bubbly out, it release aroma
and provides that tinglybite. As soon as you uncork the bottle, carbon dioxide starte diffusing from the champagne into the air, but pouring them
speeds up the process, by increading the surface area and turbulance.  Chemist, Franch
one of course, pour the champagne into fluted glasses in two ways. The
traditional way, straight down and splash off the bottom. The beer way,
onto the side to the tilted glass and they measure the CO2 lost in the pot.
At fourty Fahareheit the champagne pured traditionally quickly lost a quarter
of dioxide, but pouring on the side, casted only half gas on the lost. Close to
the room temprerature, the drink became flat fast whatever way you pour.
So you want champagne tresbon, keep it cold, and pour it bubbly like it's bud.

That’s what it might sound like if I had a tongue stud, hitting my teeth. Maybe you’ve seen people with studs in their tongue clicking it up against their front teeth, a move known as “playing.” But it turns out that the habit may destroy some smiles.

University of Buffalo researchers noticed that local high school students who had a barbell-type tongue stud commonly pushed the piercings against their front teeth. Then they examined a 26-year-old patient at the school’s dental clinic. She’d had been complaining about a large gap that had (漏了)developed between her front two teeth. Seven years previously, she got a tongue stud. And every day, for seven years, she pushed that stud up against her teeth.

The researchers say tongues are strong, and it makes sense that the force of “playing” will move teeth, even forcing them apart. The case was written up in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics.

Tongue piercings have also been associated with infections, chipped or broken teeth, and gum trauma. And the patient? She got braces to push her teeth back together. Which probably didn’t look quite as cool as she thought the tongue stud was.

8/24:Water Before Meal Means Fewer Calories Consumed

http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/podcast.mp3?e_id=99D49710-E741-5BDB-ACB8B83E7B1F1F62

以下是原文,选中可见:
Americans, and American physicians, are concerned about ballooning waistlines and the accompanying health problems. Now, researchers have presented the first randomized trial of what they hail as a side-effect-free, prescription-free, and simply free appetite control agent. That is, of course, water. Brenda Davy, lead researcher from Virginia Tech, presented the findings at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Previous studies showed that middle-aged and older Americans who drank two cups of water before a meal ate about 75 to 90 fewer calories over the course of the meal. For this study, the scientists took 48 adults between 55 and 75. All ate a low-calorie diet for 12 weeks. Half of the group drank 16 ounces of water before meals. The other half didn’t.

After the 12 weeks were over, the water drinkers lost on average 15.5 pounds, while the ones who weren’t prescribed water lost about 11 pounds. Davy says that this phenomenon could occur because water is filling and has, of course, zero calories. It could also be displacing other, sweeter drinks that the dieters might consume. It’s not a cure-all, but it’s certainly a cheap and simple addition to any weight-loss plan.

this is scientific american's 60second's science.I'm **,this will take a minute.

Disease can spread quickly. someone with a cold infects(听成in fact with) a few casual contact , who in turn infect(听成turn into) others. ideas can also spread that way. Along so-called random network. but  **,MIT says that ideas and believes can(没有) spread faster and more efficiently when they’re(听成their) reinforced in clustered networks with overlapping connections among the members.
S recruited more than 1500 perticipants for what was billed(听成built) as web-based health community. each had an anonymous profile and was matched with health buddies. In one group a minimal number of links connected the participants. the other group was denser with redundant links . in each group, a seed participant was planted with an idea to the register for an online health forum .whenever a member registered, the member’s contacts get the message. Ultimately,  54 % of the participants in the clustered network signed up, compared with 38% in the random network and the behavior spread about 4times faster in the clustered group. the study is in the journal science.

S thinks people are more swayed when they heard that multiple contacts are trying something new and public health officials should take advantage of clustered networks to encourage people of health behaviors.

thank you for the minute for scientific American 60 second, I'm**
