Argument222
The following article appeared in a recent issue of a college newspaper.
"Among all students who graduated from Hooper University over the past five years, more physical science majors than social science majors found permanent jobs within a year of graduation. In a survey of recent Hooper University graduates, most physical science majors said they believed that the prestige of Hooper University's physical science programs helped them significantly in finding a job. In contrast, social science majors who found permanent employment attributed their success to their own personal initiative. Therefore, to ensure that social science majors find permanent jobs, Hooper University should offer additional social science courses and hire several new faculty members who already have national reputations in the social sciences."
提纲:1. 由理工学生一年内找到更多的工作推出下面的结论不合理.
        2. 用学生的自己的说法作为旁证不可靠
        3. 采取了作者的措施也不一定可行,其他因素需要考虑.
The author claims that to help social science majors find permanent jobs the university should offer additional social science courses and hire several new faculty members who are well-known in the social sciences. However, although the suggestion sounds reasonable, deeply examination reveals that it suffers from some fallacious actually.

To begin with, the author cites the result of a survey among graduated students over the past five year, which indicates more physical science majors than social science majors found permanent jobs within a year. Yet, it is really unsubstantiated to be used to support the thesis of the author. Firstly, the author doesn’t mention the total number of each of these two majors. The number only can’t lead to the conclusion that science majors could find the job more easily if the numbers of graduates of it is much more than the social majors, of which the employing rate may be much higher. Secondly, how are the works of these two kinds of graduates? Are those permanent work found in a year really permanent and better than the social graduate jobs found a year later? It is likely that the social majors don’t need a permanent job but some good chances to gain experiences in the first few years. Thirdly, it is entirely possible that in the past five years, the society need more science majors than the social majors. In this case, the employment rate really has nothing to do with the university. The condition of the social majors in the university may be much better than other universities. It is unfair to compare two majors of which the social demand are actually different.

What’s more, to prove that scientific majors are more welcomed by the society, the author states that the scientific majors attribute their success to the school. However, it is quite possible that they are more modest than the social majors. Perhaps the education of these two kinds of students decides that the social students are more confident about than school. Or perhaps the social majors learn more ways of studying in university while the scientific majors learn more practical knowledge, which would make they make the wrong judgment.

Finally, the author makes the suggestion that the university should offer additional social science courses and hire more distinguished teachers. Even I concede that the analysis the author made above is right, the conclusion is still based on two unsubstantiated assumptions. First, the school doesn’t have enough social courses and the teachers are not good enough; second, the courses are the main or even only factors that could influence the employment of the students. In fact, as common sense inform us, the personality and the ability along with the social demand will influence the future of a student. Emphasis on the school only is not enough.

In sum, to support the view successfully the author will have to provide the employment rate of these two kinds of students, the more fair and scientific analysis on why the students are employed along with that the courses and the good teachers could really increase the employment rate of the social graduates.
