"The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."

I cannot agree with the statement above that , in my view , the chiefs benefit of the study of history are various, not just to break down the illusion like speaker said. And, the people in our period of time and the people who lived at any other time in history are similar in the basic human nature, and mostly different from each other.

The goal of the study of the history is learn lessons from the ancients. For example, the lessons learned during all of the past wars can make for more effective to avoid the mistakes. The studies of medical advances made through the history can be foundation the basic of the improvement in the medical field. The study of the environment problems can make us understand the cases hat cause the environment pollusion and how avoid the question. Through the study of the human active in the history, we can better communicate with each other and avoid some huge mistake.




we are told that there are many common basic human nature, such love, hate, desire, motive, fear have still remained constant over record time. For this, the events happened in history are happening and will happen in our daily lives in different countries , places and times. Recognizing this, we can avoid and solve many problems through the study of such remained basic common human nature.
That is the chief benefit of study of the history.

On the other hand, the study of the history forces the people to think about the similar and the different between the people in one period of time and people who lived at any other time in history. there are still have many differents existed in different periods, in places and times. For example, the study of American Independent War may be of little help to the understanding of current Gulf War, but it would probably relates with the European colonization of American Continent which may be helpful to the study of the origin of American spirit of independence and freedom in some ways. Therefore, many changes have happened in thousands of years. Such as the attention to women, the attitude to abortion.
All of those are caused by the development in technological and the changes in the society. All of things surrounding us are changed, the history that will be created by us will different from any other time in history.

In sum, the study of history improves people's understanding of enormous information and historical materials and records in a limited amount of time. Also, it could help to make people understand the difference between them and others who lived at any other time at history.

总体感觉楼主写得很不错。
前面两段很多错别字，pollution,not,pollusion;human actives, not active;how to avoid,not how avoid;etc
但是，举例子的这一段，写的很精彩，尤其是举的是美国的例子，很有说服力。

And, the people in our period of time and(重复使用的太近，改成with,ms你要用在similar之前) the people who lived at any other time in history are similar in the basic human nature, and mostly different from each other.
